An a huge title, too.

AFAIK WoW and Vanguard both "only" had 30 Mio for their development.

Better double check your facts.  By all accounts WOW's initial release cost roughly 75M to develop and far more has gone into it since.  (not that they can't afford it)

Can't see 40M going into just LotRO expansions, but if so maybe Turbine's going to "NGE-it" and give it a major overall haul (such as adding meaningful pvp) to try and increase the player base.

WoW was 80$mil development & 40$mil marketing.

I believe the 40$ mil is going for Asheron's Call 3.

I'd really like to see some of these "facts" with links and sources.  Not "we heard" or "its speculated" type of "facts" either.

Looney Toons Online fanbois vs Hello Kitty fanbois.  Could this genre sink any lower?!

Sink? No, I don't think so. You just described an MMO targetted towards young children, not a bad thing.

Care to back that statement up with a link?  Time and again you make these claims, often with different numbers, and never really point to where you heard this.  Please share.

$120 million to make WoW?  That would make it 4 times more than the most expensive MMO which handn't been released yet.  Even Blizzard didn't think WoW would be that successful based on how overwhelmed the servers where.

On topic I had heard that EA owned the rights to make any Harry Potter MMO in another thread.  A few people were talking about it when Bioware was bought out and speculations about harry potter were being tossed around.

Ugh, couldn't they have given it to a developer that has a clue how to make endgame content and even decent PvP?

Anyway that's quite interesting having TW invest in Turbine. But only 40M ain't much when you compare today's mmorpg's, which by now needs to deliver a lot more than they used to.

I don't think that Blizzard will have any Money issues on the upcoming MMORPG they can open hands and Activision+Vivendi throw it at them xD. But i don't think they need any outside support anyway.

Although I would hope they plan to create a new game with their own IP, my best guess is that this investment represents Turbine making their current games available to the console market.  If they go for all of the platforms at once, they make a coup and get their feet in the door of consoles as mmo platforms while that market area is still pretty virgin territory.

Their existing games are rock solid, and would have really broad appeal to a new gaming market, especially if they are really one of the few outfits offering to all of the consoles.  Worth investing in if you want to see a relatively quick return on your investment instead of waiting 4 years for the cha-ching.

I hope I'm wrong, but...we shall see.

Your comment about adding meaningful pvp to LoTRO just proves that you don't understand the game or the limitations of their liscense.  As they have said MANY TIMES on thier boards, The Tolkien family who control the liscense will not allow any PVP other than the monster PVP.

Just so you know, you're wrong. The family has no say... they own the rights to the Similarrion and the history of middle earth series or w/e... JRR sold off the rights years ago to a guy named Sal, who operates under the name Tolkien Enterprises.

If JRR himself actually sold the rights then he sold them to someone he KNEW would keep them to his personal standards.  The man had a very strict Christian background and would never have okayed any type of people playing the "bad guys".
