Funny, I just commented on this type of polling in another thread. This poll is comprised of a voluntary sample which makes it null and void in the realm of statistics. The numbers are meaningless no matter what they suggest.

Sorry murphys123, but a small nit-picky point: The fact that the sample was "voluntary" has no bearing on the validity of the poll (when was the last time you saw a compulsory poll?).  You may have mean to say that the poll may not be valid because the sample may not be representative.

Have you ever taken any form of statistics course in college? This is one of the most basic concepts taught in the subject. The fact that it is voluntary makes it not representitive of the population from which it was sampled. You cannot have a voluntary sample that is representative, so I am not sure what your disagreement is.

It's the word "voluntary" that I'm having an issue with.  If you meant to say that the sample may not be representative because of selection bias because the sample was self-selecting, then I whole-heartedly agree - it's not a *random* sample and is likely to be biased.  It really is a nit-picky point, and largely a semantic one.  There aren't many compulsory samples (U.S. Census gets close), but plenty of ones where participants are randomly sampled *and* voluntarily participate in, with or without compensation.  Replace voluntary with self-selecting, and there is no issue.

I've taken a few statistics courses in college, yes.  From basic stats and analytical demography through analysis of variance, regression, bayesian stats, and structural equation modeling.  Though my focus is on factorial designs such as analysis of variance and related models (MANOVA, ANCOVA).  Ph.D. from NYU in Cognitive Psychology with a specialization in Quantitative Psychology.  That means specialization in statistics.  I've taught statistics to undergrads and masters students.  Latest job was statistical analyst and researcher.

I wasn't trying to humble you in any way with my post to you, and I apologize if you took any offense - it was not meant.  I read these forums because I'm an avid gamer, though if you go and look at the first post I ever made to these forums, you might see that it is posts related to statistics that motivate me to chime in.  It's because of my background that I sometimes feel compelled to correct what are often minor issues that are more semantic than anything else.  I agree with your primary concern that the sample may not be representative.

Yes, by voluntary I am implying that the people who participated "chose" to do so. May have been too broad a term and self-selecting may be a better term for it, but I wasn't expecting someone so well-versed to read my point. I have done a fair bit of research in the world of academia and cringe to think what would happen if I ever used data from an internet poll. I guess that is what motivated me to post in the first place.

Well, hard to say whether any poll is valid vs another, but this informal poll from this website shows only 15.2% of the players really disliking it.

www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/181383/page/1

The MMORPG.com survey is of 508 players (decent size sample) and its on a web site that certainly doesn't lack for AOC detractors.

So, which set of 'facts' do you choose to believe?   I think the results here are more reflective of the actual situation, particularly since a large majority of gamers who are happy with the games they are playing don't even go on forums, much less come on them to talk them up or vote in polls.

OP:  So are you ready to admit that you should have titled this thread "80% of people polled happy with AoC"?  Because that's what the poll you linked actually says.

dirtknap69 tried to get with my mom last night, but instead epic failed since all he did was spam dirty words to her over the internet, and then never showed up to her house.

90% of all statistics can be made to say anything 50% of the time.

You are right I just checked the poll it is only 78% that are happy not 80%.  Most want to see the state of the game improved, and I am one of them.  But, I am happy with the purchase and fortunate to not have seen abunch of the bugs people talk about.   Lvl 41 Demo,  Tyrannt  PvP.

to the retards: read my post *carefully*, especially the underlined part.

only 30% of all who voted were both happy & pleased with the game in its current state. 70% are either not happy, or not pleased. both of which are bad, duh.

ps: it's not my poll, it's linked from the official EU AoC forums.

pps: you non-stop fanboys are hilarious, but the numbers do not lie.

Of course they are unhappy!   The damn gear stats have no effect.  Dex, str, etc do *NOTHING*.

Soon as I realized this, I just canceled by account.   Pathetic.

You know, I was going to stop posting here. I had planned to move on and not bother with the obvious troll attempts in these forums. I have ignored many of them and decided that its not worth my time anymore. HOWEVER, a post like this was enough to bring me back.

This is by far the most ignorant thing I have seen in the Age of Conan forums. This "poll" is worthless. There is NOTHING significant to this poll. I have had courses in poll writing and statistics and if you brought this into a formal presentation, you would be laughed out of the room.

I mean: how can you even think its significant? Where is the statistical breakdown of the results? How do you know one person equals one vote? How do you know the responders are Age of Conan players? At the bottom is says "create your own free poll". So anyone can make a poll....thats reassuring that it was done by someone who understands the science of polling. I think someone said it was on the EU forums. What about the Oceanic and American players? Are they taken into account? How do I now this poll wasn't posted in some WOW or WAR forum and everyone is voting against AOC just because they can?

What is the margin of error? Just curious. Oh wait, there isn't one....worthless poll.

Look at the responses, they are subjective. It is almost impossible to make a poll on subjective issues.

What do the terms "happy" or unhappy" mean? What about "current state"? Or "pleased?" ALL of those are subjective and there is no way to get an accurate reading from this poll. There is nothing redeeming about this poll AT ALL.

EDIT: Answer all of these questions and show me the margin of error and then I may consider it as an accurate poll. Until then its pointless.

And for anyone who thinks this poll is accurate or represents how people feel about Age of Conan, then you are as ignorant as the poll and the information it is trying to convey.

Umm sorry to break it to ya buddy, but many opinions are subjective. Thats what makes them opinions. You have to have some type of standard...even though we all have different tastes, people generally fall into broad categories.

Whats really wrong about this thread, and what has got me grinning my ass off, is the fact that the OP apparently cant read and Lol @ the people who support his claims.

Topic Ttitle-OP's Imagination: 70% of players are unhappy with AoC

Reality: 70% of players are generally HAPPY with AoC

Anyway, this thread makes my head hurt, the only real saving grace is the fact that it is quite amusing to read

So, lets enter a poll here just for laughs:

Is this thread one of the most moronic threads youve read on MMORPG.com?

Its so moronic I felt my IQ drop a few points after reading it.
They need to put more money and resources into high school education
The OP is an idiot.
This is more painful than sitting in raids in WoW.
This is more painful than WoW's Battlegrounds. And thats sayin something.
*Takes a smoke* ssst....what? Didnt catch you there, dude, all I see is stars...sniff...

Classic thread, thanks for the laugh.  Love the poll having 5 out of 6 options saying the game sucks and people are unhappy.  Brilliant stuff

Could it be that most of those who have an AoC hair up their ass are the ones going to that site to vote?

Out of all the people in our guild, not one has said they are unhappy with the game. They all like it very much. None of them voted on that stupid poll.

If ya don't like the game, fine. I do. I also like WoW and LotRO. But, I never went to any of these polling places. Not even for SWG...which pissed me off. But, I got that hair out of my ass.  Can you naysayers pick it out of yours?

1) Assuming that the 400,00 sale number we've heard is accurate, the current poll (1407 pollers as of my shot at it) is hardly an accurate representation. So no real data can be gleaned from it.

2)  70%+ Stated they were happy with the game overall.

3) About "Not pleased with the current state of the game". That's...kinda vague. Heck, I'M not pleased with the current state. Cause it's NOT perfect. But that doesn't mean I dislike the game or consider it not worth playing. it has bugs that need fixed. They will be fixed, and I will play a game that I like. That's what matters.
