Sandbox or not, it's all about the games being fun. Nothing else matters. |

If it has levels and questing for xp, it sux! |
Originally posted by Enigmato answer your question: none. As far as "what is linear" any game that progresses you through a pre-determined path, such as WoW, EQ2, the first 50 levels of SWG NGE, Coh/CoV... Sandbox games have may have quests but not as a method of gaining xp, leveling, or progressing your stats, example: SWG pre-cu the quests didnt reward quest xp, in fact there was no such thing as quest xp, you did the quests there for fun and minor rewards. A true sandbox is non-linear in design, relies of skills more than levels and gear, and gives a sense of freedom in game. It also should have minimal load screens and instances aswell. |

Originally posted by natuxatuThats not what I mean by skill! I wasnt trying to say that a non-linear game relies on the skill of the player, no.. I mean skills that you earn in game, for example: the SKILL to use a rifle would be better than a skill to use a pistol because a rifle has a greater range..so if we fight My rifle skills should prove to be the reason why I won the fight, not because i'm better at the game than you...understand? |

Sandbox might be fun but I prefer quests. I don't care if there is quest exp but I want quests with other rewards whether it be useless trinkets or gear. I also hate the ideal of once a dragon is killed it is gone forever that will just reward the unemployed or the people without families and drive away more business so the game will fail. |

Originally posted by karat76 Maybe, but the flip side is how special are you for killing hogger in wow? not specail at all - we have all killed hogger. In swg we all have the same gear and the same quest reward items in our houses, in wow we all have the same gear, in eq2 we all do the same dungeons, etc... I, and many others, want an evolving game that grows and learns as time goes by. A world where after I kill "hogger" that he is dead and another gnoll will have to rise to power to led those guys... |

Ok I see what you mean. I guess they could just spawn a different named mob. Guess I was taking your killed and gone forever thought to literally. Was thinking once you kill a mob they are gone forever and in that case soon the world would be empty.. |

The OP is right. Linear sucks. I've been playing MMOs since 1997 and I've got a solid understanding of which game features will appeal to young players, mature players, and which games will just totally fail. Linear games usually appeal to young players. This could be considered a 'success,' but not for older players who just want to do their own thing and have fun. In linear games and among young gamers, 'success' seems to usually be defined by who gets to the top. In sandboxes and among older players, the goal is usually just to have fun.

Originally posted by jat5560 I usually find that people on the Internet that constantly use words like "sux", are either small children or teenagers. If I'm incorrect in this case I apologize. But, I rarely see grown adults RANTING in this manner. Why are you teens so "angry" at everything? You seem to basically NOT like anything. The forums are full of you "angry" people. A nice sandbox type game would be wonderful but, this is my point. I'm a gamer. I enjoy the games for WHAT THEY ARE, not... WHAT THEY ARE NOT. If I want to game, I have to play what's available. There are certainly "fun" aspects to ALL games. You seem to lack the ability to find the "fun", and choose to sit around moping, whining and complaining about what they SHOULD be, instead of trying to enjoy them for WHAT THEY ARE. If you want to continue and enjoy gaming as a hobby, I strongly suggest you learn to find the "fun" that can be had in many titles. As it stands based on your comments, I am drawn to the conclusion that you are NOT gaming at all at present time, since no games on the market seem to fit your play style. Your narrow thinking is only causing you misery, while the rest of us are having a good time. |

If you wanted to you could go on a killing spree do it. If you wanted to stab a dog, burn a building you can. Just don't expect your self not to be killed or punished. |
