Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders |
Originally posted by Estrus Yeah, sounds alot like the WoW release where the interest in the game was alot more then they predicted, and as a result no one could find a copy of WoW anywhere for a couple months after release b/c Blizzard stopped producing them so they could catch up with demand. I remember that people, of course, were not very happy w/ Blizzard, and I'm sure people won't be happy w/ Funcom. But, such things are, sadly, a necessity . Not much can be done about a situation like this, except what they are doing. ordering more servers, beefing up the infrastructure, and not releasing more copies until they can handle it. Really, they are doing the right thing, but that won't do much to placate the people that ended up on the outside looking in. |

I honestly didn't expect them to have sales anything like that at first. I know they had said one reason they limited "head start" was they didn't have the servers to do it. The one option was to take the closed beta servers and set those up.. but they had converted them to a "live test" bed a while ago.. obviously needed for testing. Not much to say really.. but the 700,000 shipped and "couldn't meet all existing orders" (server limitations etc) was pretty suprising.. to me at least. See how it goes over the next few months.

| "We already have two operating MMOs. We launched a game called Ultima Online in 1997. It's still got hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Then there's Dark Age of Camelot, we also have a situation where we have well over 100,000 subscribers." -Frank Gibeau of Electronic Arts. Does it seem odd that UO has more subscribers than the best RvR game on the market? |

Now watch for the ebay auctions once this news becomes widespread. You'll see all the secret stashes of CEs appear ;) The OP said collector's editions though. Nothing about the standard editions? |

Now my marketing foo is rusty, but if I read the release correctly they are talking about Sell-In not Sell-Through. Since they talk about Funcom shipping that many boxes, which must mean to retailers and they're still talking about CE copies being available at retailers then they must be talking about Sell-In. This would be supported by the fact that you can still order the CE online from multiple outlets. In that case you would hope that they're actually selling all the copies they made into the channel. Still you can't Sell Through more copies than you Sell-In so it is encouraging that they're shipping out a healthy number of boxes.
