Is this the best PvP MMO? If not, what is? And does DAoC run on Vista? |

I am a fairly new subscriber to this site, but i am a long time subscriber to DAOC. I can honestly tell you that the pvp in Camelot is very different when compared to many MMO's. First off, the basic setup is a Realm vs Realm type of PVP that is unique to Mythic Studios. Three realms all pulling and tugging at each other for control of towers, keeps, and relics. With this in mind, Camelot is PVP with a reason. Many, if not most, MMO's have PVP that really has no bearing on the rest of the world or game. The Realm vs Realm (RVR) in DAOC ultimately is about relic control, in a Frontier area. The PVE areas are free from ganking, but are reliant on the success of the RVR zones. Ya see, Relics give bonuses to Melee and Casters in the entire realm. So the PVE types benefit with doing more damage because of the work of the RVR's. This makes leveling, questing, and dungeons more feasable. At the same time, not defending your relics will cause the entire realm to LOSE bonuses to Melee and Caster Damage. This affects RVR and PVE alike. So, whichever realm controls the most relics, has the most bonus power. This makes DAOC really stand out compared to other PVP systems. Another interesting aspect of the RVR system for DAOC is that there are Three Realms. So now your realm has TWO enemies positioning to take your tower and keeps and your relics. This also gives your realm TWO offensive fronts to tackle. There is a level of strategy involved that truly surpasses traditional PVP. It is not uncommon to see a 100 to 200 zerg of ally's running thru the frontier pushing an equally threatening group of enemies out of critical keeps and towers. The battles can be very intense at times.
So, if you like Mass Battles with battering rams, boiling oil, and an actual reason for PVP, then DAOC is the best PVP game out there.....for now. See, Mythic has teamed up with Electronic Arts and are working on Warhammer Online. This is expected to be a more intense version of the already successful RVR style of PVP found in DAOC. They have taken all of the aspects loved by the players of Camelot and intergrated, as well as, expanded them for Warhammer. It will be interesting to see if they can pull it off. So you might wanna look into both. In regards to Vista, Yes you can play DAOC on Vista. Works just fine for my buddies that are using it. Personally, I'm still happy with XP Pro so I havent checked yet.
Hope this was helpful, and have fun researching. |

RvR is the ultimate in PvP! Nothing else is even a glimmer... Also I have recently tested DAoC on Vista Ultimate 64bit and it runs perfectly! |

Been back to Dark Age on my laptop with Vista and it works flawlessly. There were a few uploading errors at first , but the support site fixed them all for me. |

I think that Dark Age of Camelot still has by far the best pvp system available. It's a shame the population is dwindling, at least compared to the times of old. The 3 realms competing for 1 goal was I think a great community builder. It gave people a common thing to focus on. Nobody as of yet has copied it and I'm slightly hopeful that that Warhammer will do something even though it's only 2 opposing sides and not 3. But I guess the Warhammer lore only allows for Order and Chaos, and I'm not all that familiar with its back story and lore to properly comment on it. I'm just going to wait and see. |

Cynical? Me? Never. |
When there was close to 2000 people per server(2500+ on Merlin and Lancelot) it was a blast. Even at 1500 it was a blast. The fun started waning when 1000 and fewer people are on a server/cluster. That's the drawback to a pvp/rvr game. |
