I just came across a newly announced MMO called Mortal Online, which is being produced by a company in Sweden. According to their website, the core development team was involved in the beta days of UO. Apparently, MO is designed to be a true sandbox, skill-based, level-less MMO, with full FFA and full loot PvP, where you can be and do pretty much anything you want--with touted next-gen graphics. First person, real-time combat is intended to give a visceral feel. PvE is also available in the form of hunting mobs for loot and treasure. Not sure about the quest system. http://www.mortalonline.com/features Sadly, I never played UO, but I have grown tired of theme-park MMOs, and am looking for something different. I think a true sandbox game might be fun for a change, even if very challenging. The company admits that it will probably appeal to mostly hardcore players, but has room for casual players as well. From everything I have heard MO sounds much like the early 'classic' version of UO. What do you guys think? I made a similar post on the UO forums, but wanted to get opinions from the general discussion forum as well. Anyone have any inside info on this game? |

A good game needs no defending. A bad game needs no forums. |
Sounds great. Hope their PVP has some consequences such as NPC faction hits. Last purely open PVP game I played was Shadowbane and it was ruthless; I'd get ganked just logging in. Still, it's good to see someone making a sandbox-style game. Will watch this one closely. |

Man, I was just over there reading the forums and finding out game features and stuff. There are some seriously sick people over there. They are debating perma death and all sorts of crap. I felt kinda creepy reading all of that stuff. Full on PVP , with Looting and consequences. I dunno man, we might get another Ted Bundy out of that game LOL. (Just kidden by the way) Seriously, read the forums. To be honest some of the ideas the people were coming up with were quite cool(not about perma death and crap, the other stuff) Being a Non-PvP'er I might get into this game just to see how it plays. Some of the features are really nice.

Originally posted by BobRoss Some of what you mentioned is what the developers are already planning. Full, open world PvP and PvP looting are already set in stone pretty much because the devs want those. Also item decay and eventual breakage. Perma-death is just forum posters talking, I don't think the devs have ever even said they would consider it. I'm not absolutely clear about it but I think the devs are planning to use factions or reputation or something to try to discourage completely random PKing. Don't quote me on that but it seems that I read something along those lines. PvP looting is...unpleasant when it happens to you...but great for the game. It means that the game can't be a god awful item grind. If they are planning to have PvP looting it means they can't be planning to make a game focused on endless grinding for equipment upgrades, because the two things just don't work together. However, they still haven't released much detailed information about the game so there is a lot we still don't know. And, of course, it's still in the early development phase so they could still sell out to the "we want another linear gear grind!" crowd. Or it might be vaporware. Or a meteor might impact their offices. Or they might stick to their dream but make a crappy game anyway. Or they might make a really great game. It's too early to tell. |

I read about Mortal Online about a month ago. It is definatly suppose to be like early UO which would be amazing! However, I have serious doubts about MO's release. I'm going to continue to follow it, but I definatly wouldn't count on this game for another few years, if at all. |

A forum poster over there made a collection of info about the game from what the Dev's have said. www.mortalonline.com/forums/1405-information-summary.html This game looks like its going to be a whopper. They have thier work cut out for them, that is sure. |
