Over 400.000 gamers have entered game – First 20 reviews with an average review score above 90% Durham, USA – May 26th, 2008 – Funcom is proud to announce that Age of Conan is one of the fastest selling PC games of all time. More than 400.000 gamers have entered Hyboria over the last few days, with almost half coming from the North American market. This amazing figure for a PC game shows that the positive pre-order trend has transferred into actual sales, and people from all over the world are now flocking to the most savage, sexy and brutal MMO ever created. Over the weekend an astounding amount of concurrent gamers were logged on to the game, making Age of Conan one of the busiest MMOs in the western hemisphere. With stock flying out of several retail chains, Funcom expects the number to increase in the days to come. In addition to the many gamers logging in, there was also substantial traffic to the Age of Conan websites, with more than 2,2 million unique visitors during the last ten days. As a result of the great launch, players and press have been raving about the unique qualities of the game, and the first 20 reviews give Age of Conan an average score above 90%. The first US reviews are also live, with Gamezone.com giving the game an Editor’s Choice Award, a 9.4 of 10 score, while heralding Age of Conan as a “Benchmark MMO”. Sci-Fi.com was also an early mover and gave the game a straight A, stating that “If Robert E. Howard had been a game designer..., this is the Conan he would have invented.” “The initial sales and reviews are very encouraging, and it’s great to see that so many are enjoying Age of Conan,” said Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. “This is just the beginning, and we already look forward to massive updates and cool new features. We believe our focus on making Conan unique and groundbreaking is a key reason for the initial success. This is a focus we will keep and reinforce, and players can expect continued quality and innovation as we enter a new era for the game.” For more information about the game, please visit www.ageofconan.com.

Unique and groundbreaking is right why it s selling well. It s also the reason it won t maintain alot of the initial sales with subs. This has been their marketing for along time now and it simply isn t true. Many people were disillusioned by their marketing team. Good for them but we ll see in a couple months time. |

How could they have 1M subscriptions when they didn't produce so many boxes to be sold in the first place? AoC is a nitce game, people should be happy with subscribes roughly the amount of LOTRO. |

Everyone wants to feel good about the game they play.. Like they are part of the "smarter" "better" crowd.. Thats why everyone loves to throw things like "1 mil+++++ subs" around these forums.. Makes them feel like they are "IN" and you are "OUT".. 400k isn't bad.. Its actually average for launch and if it were to stay that way it would be above average. Hmm, as far as it being one of the fastest selling PC games of all time, I'm pretty sure that any other overhyped MMO would sell just as fast as we struggle to find something new to play.. Warhammer will do the same and also be hailed as "One of the fastest selling pc games ever". “There are dread secrets that none may know and have peace. More, secrets that render whosoever knoweth them an alien unto the tribe he belongs to, that cause him to walk alone on earth, for he who takes, pays.” -E. Hoffmann Price |

Funcom knows advertizing, that's all it means. And making sexy adds with AoC graphics is something that a retarded monkey could do. In couple of months we'll see if AoC is a success or not. |

Cool, I hope it continues to be successful and they are able to add more dynamics to the game. As it stands right now there isnt enough to the game for me to want toplay it, but the graphics and the combat are great. AOC has potetnial! |

Originally posted by Lottobarn I enjoy AoC, but this is just nothing but hype. Lets look at some PC game final sales numbers shall we? Top PC sellers by genre
Kinda looks like AoC has a long way to go to top some of these sales numbers. Yes they are final numbers, but come on, not even WoW has sold 50 million copies. This is too much for even Funcom. I really wish they would stop spinning the hype machine. Their game is good and they need to stop trying to get players by acting like everyone in the world plays their game. They need to focus on the features, not the sales. Cheers! |

I agree vmoped however, you do realize that the PR team and the dev teams are seperate. The coders working on the client and the gfx artists creating the assets aren't the same people who make the advertisements and develop the hype surrounding the product.
I'm sure there are plenty of people there focused on features, while the PR team are focused on sales (as is their job). That being said, I do wish they'd tone it down a few notches. |
