Is anyone else getting really fed up of seeing every single MMO advert out there with some hot CGI chick wielding a huge sword or crazy asian hairstyle?

It's not just that but the other day i was browsing looking for MMO info when i saw an advert for an MMO that claimed i could "Fight monsters in a 3d world". Really? I did not know we were technically capable of that in 2008.

Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's the 3468648723 new MMO's that are released every day that are completely and utterly worthless. Or maybe it's the plethora of F2P MMO's that seem to spawn overnight that always look exactly the same and always boast the same features.

And other catchy titles like "Join the quest" "Make new friends" "Explore a beautiful world" "Fight evil dragons".

Look at the audience.  Pale, pimply nerds, young and old, for the most part.  Do the math=)

It's called marketing, and they use the same thematic icons for countless products.

Try turning the sound off of your television and watch commercials. You'll learn a lot about what they're trying to suggest and sell to you.

Its been a while since I was sold by Hot CGI chicks.  I mean sure I am sold by Hot Avatars, but no longer the high poly thing you see in the generic trailer that comes out.  I think companies have dropped vision for sales numbers.  Don't they understand that the community is yearning for something of actual worth.  Something different, refreshing, interactible, and achieving.  Game development shouldn't be about following a certain list of things to assure success aside from Pre-planning--->Development--->Testing--->Release.

Its one reason why I have been more happy with Asian MMOs rescently.  Western titles have been the same thing over and over again, yet miss the mark on making something meaningful.

It depends on what your playing.  If you are playing Lineage II clone #386, then yea.  But there are far more original asian mmo imports then Western mmos.  All and I mean All western mmos have had the same premise behind them.  It gets boring.

What bothers me, more-so then the "CG SEX SELLS" ads, is the fact that nothing in the game even vaguely resembles the hot chick with the pointy green hair and the sword large enough to cleave the panhandle off of Oklahoma.  It's the same sort-of technique as putting out a pre-rendered trailer with great, High-Rez graphics and displaying an epic tale of four waring nations on a tragicly doomed planet, only to show up and have the game turn out to be a little grindfest with more bugs, engrish, and cash-shop unbalancers then anyone would care to recite.

It's enough to make a fellow cynical about the whole market.

Personally it's the gameplay for the #1 priority, I enjoyed runescape for a while and the graphics in that are... but nevertheless the game has some decent gameplay.
