Howdy, pard'ners

I'm wondering if there's any reason for me to pick up two copies of the game next week.  I greatly extended my interest in Everquest 2 by trying various fun combinations of characters, in large part due to the fact I can't play at times when most other players are online (late evenings).  I got quite good at it, using various in-game macros and my Nostromo speedpad.

Is a similar thing possible in Age of Conan?  Can you divide your atttention enough to make it a worth-while pursuit?  Does the game seem to support this (macros) or is it geared against it?  Are there any combinations of character types that would work best for this?  Or should I just abandon the whole idea and stick with a single copy?

Thanks in advance for responding!

I think macros are against the TOS.. not sure how it would be possible.

AoC even supports (if I remember the error I got) dual installs on the same machine as long as it's a different folder (or maybe it requires a different partition). I don't see thneed for it other than for farmers but I suppose in some cases it might be useful. Actually, if my brother who plays limited hours asked me too I  would probably install a copy on my other machine, all on 'low' settings and help him through some quests if he wanted to roll a toon to hang with me besides his 'solo play' main.

"Easy" only equals "better" for crack addicts and MMORPG developers.

Why not just get a single copy? Check things out n then if things are to your liking you can always pick up a second copy on a later date. That is if you were planning on grabbing it anyway.

There is that logic, of course. I figured he was a 'rabid' player when I answered. You don't NEED to have a dual play to level. Sure you need some caution  in some locations but where's the fun if you didn't. I found most mobs to be spaced well enough to be able to fight, rest and fight again unless I went into 'High speed retreat' mode and ran through previously unaggro'd mobs :)

What?  So you're saying that you want to create macros for a character to team up with you?  Like what, follow you around, attack your target, heal you when your health is low?  First of all, the game doesn't support that.  You'd have to create a program, assuming AoC releases the details that would give you those options.

I don't know if you can do it, I'm not super ambidextrous, and I don't have two speed pads that I could somehow attach to different copies of the game and control a character with each.  If you are.. good luck with that.  The combat is completely manual, there's no auto attacking.  I'm going to be playing on off hours as well.  I'm going to try the Cimmeria server.  I work second shift, so it will either be in the morning or in the middle of the night.

Here's what I'd suggest.  Find a friend in game.  Or, find a friend outside of the game that works similar shifts.  Or, get into a guild and find the people who play at different times.  By all means, if you can control two characters at once, go for it.  I know I can't.  I'd rather be extremely skilled with once character than to be barely average with two characters.  Or you can level with me on Cimmeria.

I'm not sure what 'need' has to do with anything, you don't 'need' to play a single copy of the game.  I don't 'need' to play online at all, for that matter, its just fun and as I said in the original post, I happened to find it fun.  I've played many, many games and this so-called 'join a guild' response has always left me feeling cold.  Smaller guilds vanish so quickly that its become obvious to me that joining them in the first place is a waste of time.  Larger guilds have vast lists of rules, usually involving raiding requirements, and as I also mentioned I cannot play in the evenings and so have always been left out of 'raid' type content.  I am the very opposite of a rabid gamer, I just happen to have two computers.  If I didn't start two-boxing in Everquest 2 I would have quit playing it much, much earlier than I did.  I ask mostly because leveling up two at the same time is easier than playing one for a while, then trying to catch up the other character.  Its nice that most of you have so much time that joining groups is possible for you, but please try to remember that is not always the case for other players, and so we try to work around this limitation; two-boxing being one solution.

What do you mean we?  You say that almost as if you have a cult of people who do this all the time.  Honestly, I've played almost a decade of MMO's and I've never heard of one person actively controlling two characters at the same time.  And when I think of PvP, I just LoL all over the place.

I gave you a suggestion, if it's not what you're looking for, that's fine.  Like I said, if you can do it, go ahead.  It really doesn't matter to me.  In my opinion, I don't think it's hard to find a casual guild or make a friend, but maybe that's more difficult for you for some reason.  I don't know.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

I think it'd be possible, albeit more work than in most previous MMOs.

I'm not really all that familiar with how the healing works in AoC... haven't really tried out the casters much yet.  But, my guess is that a healer/melee or ranged/melee or some type of mix would work alright, so long as you didn't need to be moving around and meleeing on both.

I'm sure you could have a pair of melee-oriented characters, but it would probably be a hassle.  I am thinking of maybe a Bear shaman(melee healer) and a regular melee when I mention that.

The fact that you can queue a few attacks(I don't remember how many, it may only be 3) will give you some slack for the combat... so depends how much moving around you want to do I'd think.

I've known players who play 6 and 8 at a time, psychotic I know, but to each his own.  I appreciate the real responses to my thread, I was genuinely curious as I have not gotten into AoC beta, and have little foreknowledge regarding playability.

I very often played 2-5 characters back in EQ(sometimes 6 but that was pushing it on my comps ;))

I occasionally PL'd with 2 in WoW, but it just wasn't nearly as effective after the EQ era, since everything became more fast-paced and there was so much moving around.  It' was still(and still is) doable, but the efficiency has really dropped as the newer games come along :(

I had to LOL at this. 10 years and you've never heard of anyone dual-boxing? Either your streching the truth somewhat or your oblivious to it. *If* you have been playing online games for 10 years as you say (and i've no reason to doubt that having played for longer than that myself) I promise you've seen bot-squads running around. You may not have known they were all one player .. but they were there.

Heck back in EQ1 I was running 3 accounts at a time .. I knew people who ran more .. why? Well back when I played EQ1 I lived in the UK .. so my playtimes were way off. Even after moving to the US tho I still run second / third accounts. WoW fast paced? Not really .. I ran 3 man WoW squads as well. EQ2 is very easy to bot in and it was'ent unusual to see full squads of 8 toons being botted. Everygame has bots and I bet AoC will have too .. just takes some getting used to.

Just FYI ... While I agree that a person playing 2 or more toons is not as efficent as that *same* person playing 1 toon .. thats no yardstick. I've know people who played 1 toon worse than I played 3 .. I've joined groups where they thought my Bot was another person and spoke to them in Group chat ... generally its polite to inform your group its a bot and refuse a loot share etc .. be willing to drop your bot for a real player (Things i do) .. but not everyone is polite ...

You definately aren't making it up. Ive seen it in every game ive ever played. In guilds I have been a part of, the biggest use is to lvl a new toon with ease. Not sure how he hasn't seen anyone do it in 10 years. But I suppose its possible ...winning the lottery is also.

LOL!? What? You're either lying, or lying. EQ made 2-boxing. DAoC you had to have a buffbot to succeed. EQ has people 6 boxing for crying out loud.

I've four boxed before, but at that point I was working too hard to enjoy the game. 2 boxing is extremely common. Especially in the older games where you find hardcore people like the OP and myself.

I've done it in a couple games, but I just don't see it happeneing in AoC.
