Ok, so first take a look see at this picture:

The elf on the right with the huge shield and halberd looking thing, can a Swordmaster use those weapons? I was thinking of playing a "tank" type and find that I prefer the shield/weapon combo but all I've ever seen in the preview vids are the Swordmasters with just... a 2h sword.

All tank classes can use great weapons or sword and board, it's all up to the player to decide which they rpefer and the masteries they choose,  the High Elf Swordmaster is just best known for it's great weapons, thus pictured most often with it's iconic blade. The sword and board path for the Swordmaster is the Path of Vaul.

"Path of Vaul
The Path of Vaul is primarily focused on defense, and a Master of this path may very well be temped to lay aside his Greatsword in favor of an elegant Elf-crafted shield instead. The Swordmaster who specializes in this path will be the core that the lines of battle form around. "

Thanks for the information! Sounds good plus that monstrous shield looks cool ;)
