"You know what happened to the man that got everything he ever wanted? He had nothing to hope for."

According to a news blast on id Software's boards today, your Doom is nigh once again:

"Production has begun on DOOM 4™, the next journey into the legendary DOOM universe. We are expanding our internal team and are currently hiring to work on this highly anticipated title."

For those unfamiliar with the franchise (what rock have you been hiding under?), the series was among the first breakout hits to introduce the concept of a First Person Shooter game. Since then, it's been blamed for everything from corrupting youth to global warming. All right, I exaggerate a bit. (Just a little bit). Heck, we still use Doom 3 in some of our WorldBench graphics tests.

What is the deal with Doom 4, though? Good question. No word on if it'll use the same graphics engine getting tuned for the upcoming post-apocolyptic shooter, RAGE. And who knows if it'll even see light of day in this decade?

The only thing we can tell you right now is that if you don't mind the Texas heat, you can apply for a job at the Mesquite, Texas offices.

We're waiting to hear back from spokespeople, so stay tuned for any new details that pop up.

I could have sworn that was Wolfenstein, or am I wrong?

You are right. Wolfenstein was their first "public successful FPS."  Doom didnt come out  until 2 years later.

Wolfenstein would be nice on the new engine but Call of Duty pretty much destroyed the WW2 Genre.

However, if they do make a new Doom game I hope it'll be better than the last.  I thought the last one was sorta retarded. Zombies poping out of the middle of nowhere even after you scoured the room first.  There was no strategy to it. Just run and shoot.  That strategy is fun at first but gets really old.

I hope they improve the AI, allow you to hide from the AI, dont make the Mobs "appear out of nowhere."

Well, I missed the part about Wolfenstein when I posted ( was too happy about another Doom game lol ), but yes it was the first.

And I agree with you, Enigma. All the Doom games have always been just run-and-gun, nothing to really think about except which keycard goes to which door, but I was kinda hoping for a bit more with Doom 3. I'm hoping they'll add a little more story/interactivity in Doom 4, maybe something along the lines of Bioshock.

I think you will find that Doom 3 was just an excuse to show off some awesome graphics, the game came second to that.

So hopefully Doom 4 will actually have a story to it.

-Part of the glorious PC gaming master race since 92

This new game they're working on, RAGE, it's rated T/Teen.  They sold out.  Sell outs.  Marketing to 14 year olds because industry analysts say this is the group that has the most disposable income spent on entertainment and blah blah blah.

It's everywhere- the push to get teenage entertainment dollars.  It's in music, it's in movies- and now it's in my god damn video games.

I'd just like to say a Teen rating isn't going to help them make any more money.  Look at the Aliens and Predator movies- and then the Aliens Vs. Predator movies...

Predator 1 + 2 = Rated R

Aliens 1 - 4 = Rated R

AVP = Rated PG-13

AVP2 = Rated R

There's a reason for that... and the reason is AVP was a flop without the blood and guts.  Meanwhile AVP2 hung on to top 100 seeded movies on Piratebay for quite a while.  Might still be for all I know.
