Back in late 2006 launch was in October, Athelan was ready to go home... launch gets delayed and they are 100% positive launch would be March 2007.  I was with The Acolytes at this time.  We were all pumped and excited about our new gaming rigs.  Skullcrusher updated his UO machine to be able to play AoC.  Hell, I even remember Rock with the Acolytes buying some piece of hardware that allowed him to have front view on one monitor and left and right side each on two other monitors.  Everyone was pimping out their systems and stations  Fast forward to today and damn, I wish I would have saved my money.  It seems like processors and video cards are 2x better today than even March of 2007.  In all honesty, it is time to upgrade again!

Anyone else upgrade last year for AoC and wish they had that money back to upgrade now?

You were with the Acolytes? That's like a former born again Christian preeching Devil worship and flaming the church! Damn it Avery, why didn't you destroy this infidel when you had the chance? This is the most shocking piece of news to come out about AoC since the launch date was last pushed back!

BTW I don't upgrade for anything, I upgrade my mobo about once every one to two years, same with CPU. GPU & SC yearly and Ram is so cheap I upgrade it when I need more. I wouldn't go crazy buying top of the range gear for one game, too many friends did that for VG and got burnt.

Technology does move fast...  I built my machine in September for my birthday for $974 with shipping(Already had a monitor) and it runs AoC on medium settings with some things turned up and some shadow stuff turned down at a constant 60fps.  It's dropped down into the low 40's and once or twice early on into the 30's.  Overall though it runs AoC very well, and the same machine could be built today for probably 600-700$ since my vid card at the time was $400 and now it's around $200.

I think as they optimize the engine and the game is around for a bit you will be able to figure out exactly how to optimize your machine to get the most out of the game for not a lot of money.

To answer your question though..  I always want better PC parts and upgrades.  Almost every month I have an urge to upgrade, but my wife won't let me.  I had to build my PC on my birthday because I had everyone buy me parts or send me money for it.  My wife is strict...

What, I sit on the fence.  You talk about me as if it is a bad thing.  Anyway, they did try to tar and feather me.  So, at least they tried before I got away.

Shannia I'm an AoC fanbois (for now anyway) so comments that aren't half way up Funcoms butt are posted by trolls and haters! I was just having a laugh, but you do seem to have a dark sense of forboding concerning some aspects of AoC. Although you accept it will be a success, just not as much as some fanbois are hoping. I agree with you on this however as such high system specs will prevent mass appeal needed for active subs over 500k.

Profred be reasonable here, what's more important your wife or your computer? Exactly, so tell that miserable cow to go burn her bra somewhere else and stop flapping her lip in your ear! Damn, how many times have I heard males whipped by his missus over vent,

Agricola "Do you want to group with us for some PvP?"

Anonymous whipped male "Yeah great! Oh s***!"

[sound of door slamming]

Agricola "What's up?"

Anonymous whipped male "I erm have to go, I'll talk to you tomorrow."

[sound of keys on the table]

Anonymous whipped male's slave driver wife "DAVE! WHERE'S MY BLOODY DINNER? HAVE YOU BEEN WASTING TIME ON THAT BLOODY COMPUTER AGAIN? YOU MISERABLE LITTLE SHH"

[logs off vent]

Agricola "OK guys I guess he won't be on again for a few weeks!"

[everyone cracks up laughing]

So get your priorities right, a computer never talks back and costs less money to run!

The pen is mightier than the sword if the sword is very short, and the pen is very sharp.

I built/bought my machine a couple months ago. It was primarily so I could run some processor intensive apps with the added bonus of having a machine that would run AoC. (I bumped the sound and video up a bit higher than I needed for the app, heh).

My wife is satisfied that i am doing my 'work work and I'm 95% happy with  AoC's playability. But I never upgrade for a game unless it's a specific part replacement at a good price. That said, I buy/build a new machine every 12-18 months so I can run newer, stronger, faster, better (??!??) work apps so a lot of 'new' comes in pretty regularly.

I suspect that you'll see teh game tweaked in the after release months so lesser spec'd machines will run it better. Once they get a baseline lull, they can tweak the servers as well as adding in 'code' to promote less high PC stat usage.

I'm not going all 'fanboi' in this comment...it's something I know from professional experience that  usually happens. Whether subs go over 500K (or less) from 'over time appeal' is something we'll all have to wait for.

Sitting on the fence is always a safe bet...that way you can go back n forth on anybody at anytime rather than taking a stand.

N you upgraded your PC for one game? But I do see your point...I just got my new PC back in Dec...n already I see it outdated...plenty good enouph to run AoC, but prolly could be better with somethin new.

Yes, I upgraded for AoC.  I was glad to do it but didn't need it for any other game that came out over the past 18 months.  It was overkill.  Just saying what I bought then compared to what is out now seems to have been such a waste of money.  Oh, and for the record, I did take a stand.  I was die hard fanbois of AoC until I saw funcom's vision of their crafting system in December.  I was pissed like no other and was ready to drop the game for good.  Avery calmed me down.  That is why I'm still here.  Avery is giving me a buddy key so I can test out the game and crafting.  Hopefully, I enjoy the crafting system and buy, buy a copy of the game and remain around AoC for years.  I guess we'll know this time next week.
