So the problem is that people who hate on the game, on the devs, on the idea of Darkfall will be the same ones playing it if it goes live.
Like I said, it's a BIG if.
In theory alone, WoW, AoC, WAR, any other game can't touch Darkfall. So, I for one, hope that the game really does hit stores in 2008, and I'm glad they have at least drawn a line in the sand saying so. If Darkfall doesn't hit stores in 2008 then it should pretty much go away at that point.

In a sense it is slowly going away. They haven't really given us anything new besides a journal entry on the Warcry network last month. The news on the site doesn't even mention that Journal post either and that hasn't even been updated since February. I think the devs are starting to see it for themselves.

edit: i see they do have a new update that was posted on the forums for may 9th. kinda makes me wonder why they dont post this news on the site itself and is keeping it mainly for the forums. Probably because its less work.

Not really. The majority of software products are internally tested, so it does follow that they use a Q/A testing team on their products, plus AI can be tested against a number of possible conditions that map out all possible states that the given AI can exhibit, thus thousands of players doing the same thing is not cost effective when you can do the same with maybe ten systems, plus the world server and a load of scripts (hint: you don't need the graphical client to check this either, so you can run through scripts 24/7 over thousands of passes to see if any oddity pops up and is logged). AI in this case, probably won't be beyond Crysis-quality, but it will probably be close in some respects. That's if the devs are on the level. I can't say they are so I can only state what I've said is based on other developers and how they work: a house of 'cards' (assumptions) that only need one pulled out for the rest to fall.

Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his brother.

If the game really does come out in 2008, well wont that be suprising!

Maybe alot of the Elitest fans can say there instead of on forums then? I suspect they will if any part of what DF promises is not in game, will be their only hiding place.

I think if DF ever gets released it won't be the be-all-end-all of the MMO space. Aventurine doesn't have the resources to promote the product, but I suspect the product itself will be very profitable for them. And it will probably push their team into the lime-light of game developers. My hope is that, in this hypothetical, that developers take notice that such ideas are not impossible nor necessarily illogical to fulfill. Sure, it means having three or four possible major feature sets for a game title, but then if you're doing to do that you might as well reconsider the game as a game of games and not just a single self-contained title. In some ways, this is much like what happened at the late 1970s, where module programming hit its logical end and OOP was finally getting hinted at as a practical reality in development. Which really means DF, published or not, is a hinting that single feature set games are ending to be the end-all-be-all in kind.

/nail-on-the-head-analogy but, I will feel bad for the devs who feel they have to 1up Adventurine and spend 6 - ?? years on a new project. Maybe they should focus less on perfecting the games they make and start perfecting the tools they use to make games? Your average joe could probably make a game with WoW-like production values with 'Super MMO Engine 50.'

i almost would have believed you if they never posted this quote from their dev journal #25

"Something that Darkfall has that other games may lack during testing is help from the AI. In Darkfall the game doesn't really distinguish between a player and the AI. The AI are bots actually living their life and skilling up within the game. The AI has been helping us test a large part of the game almost as if players were in it."

hmmmm...sounds like not a big group of testers in the game i say.
