"As you think, so shall you become"

A class that I would like to play is a "Doppleganger"

This class would work in transforming your character into any NPC or player you see and gaining all the abilities and spells of the NPC/player you are cloning.

of course the effects would only be temporary and your normal form would be considerably squishy as most Dopplegangers travel in the nude or clone armors out of raw materials found in the world, such as barkskin or Ironskin.

Some sort of self-morphing class. Druids come close, but they are completley different in execution.

A true engineering/tinkering class would be cool to. A class that can build and use devices attached to the body or turrets of some sort, all sorts of funky traps and bombs and gizmos.

A spirit class would be cool. You are a ghost of whatever race. You play by "possesing" mobs in the world. Once you have possessed a mob of your level you use its HP and powers to communicate with the living to do quest/grind. When you level you can leave to old mob and get a new higher level one. If you possessed body is killed your kicked out and can be attacked directly. Killing your ghost form effects you like a normal player death. Gear would be a strange thing to handle for this class but something could be worked out.

Cynical? Me? Never.

I've never seen a tank that can cast devastating offensive spells. Like a wizard/fighter type. I always see the fighter/healer combo that have the weak offensive spells.

Maybe a better question to begin with would be: what other archetype would you like to see?

I think the standards we have might be Tanks, DPS, Healers, Buffers/Debuffers

Classes generally fit into one of those categories, or are mix of two, sometimes three of them.

What else do we need to do in game besides absorb damage, deal damage, heal the damage, and make others do less or more damage or take less or more damage?

Whew!

Different classes just do the above in a different way or to a different degree.  For instance A tank might use armor or forcefields, but it's still performing the same role.  Some classes might do DPS with a spells or with sharks with lazer beams, but they're still DPS.

EDIT: I'm not saying this is all we NEED to do, but in a general sense that's what a lot of the gameplay in mmorpgs are- whether they are PvP or not.   Of course there is Crowd Control, Stealth, and other aspects that could be considered too.

I know some argue to get rid of classes altogether.  I rather like them.

So, I think your question is valid.  But that just puts a spin on it, because right now I can think of a few classes, but they each fit into one of the archtypes above.

I know there's some good thinking to do here - but I'm a bit burnt by the week.  I'll keep going though :)

I got to go with Provacation like Ultima Online. Its been done but that was 12 years ago. BTW im playing on a free server that is pre Lord Blackthorns Revenge expansion and it is still awsome, so glad i started playing again.

Anyways a Provoker plays music to entice 1 creature to attack another creature. Plus how about animal tamers, i havent played all the mmo's so im not sure if they have been done to death or not
