I'm sure this is an old subject, but having gotten into the 14 day trial recently with a friend (we both played pre-cu, I played almost from launch), I wanted to ask some things that we were asking:

- After all this time, why doesn't SWG have collision detection?  We're still walking through furniture like we did 5 years ago, we're still unable to hide behind terrain when something is shooting at us.

- After all this time, why doesn't SWG have a Z axis?  We still can't jump up onto or over anything, we still can't fall off of anything, we can still walk straight up sheer cliff faces.

 - After all this time, why do the creature lairs have exactly the same "method" of destruction as they did 5 years ago?  We still "kill the roamers, hit the lair, kill the pops, hit the lair, kill the pops, etc.," exactly like we did then.  There's been no progress or improvement in this department in 5 years?

Really, these questions are more rhetorical, in order to make the point that I think the reason these things are still the same after 5 years is BECAUSE THEY CAN'T BE FIXED WITH THE CURRENT GAME DESIGN.  Whether a new engine is needed or whatever, if it hasn't been addressed after 5 years, it never will be.  So if it were possible, we should all leave the game, let it go away, and wait for development of a new Star Wars MMO.

Key words being "if it were possible."  I understand that some think that until a new SW MMO comes out, they will play in the only one available.  But is continuing to playing this game only serving to prevent that from happening?

With all that said, my friend and I are enjoying the game somewhat, but only wish the above issues (which dampen much immersion) had been addressed since we last played.

Is continuing to play this game serving to prevent a sequel or a different SW MMO?  Yes, most likely.  As far as I know SOE still has contractual obligations with Lucas Arts, at least for this particular time frame.  It is possible that there is another SW mmo in development under a different timeline however it is unlikely.

Continuing to pay SOE for the game that they have on offer does prevent SOE from making any further radical changes to the gameplay.  Yes they drove away 4/5ths of their subscriber base with the NGE and they are most likely hesitant if not downright afraid of driving away the remaining hopefuls.

There is somethign else to look at as well while looking at this: No sequel in the MMO space has performed as well as the original game.  EQ2 while somewhat successful is still not doing as well as the original EQ.  Asheron's Call 2 shut down not too long ago and Lineage2 while seeing moderate success in asia has probably close to SWG's numbers here in the west and no where near the numbers that they had had with Lineage.  Ultima Online 2 was cancelled before it even got out the gates primarily because, as I was told by a person that worked there at the time, they didn't want to split up the ultima fanbase.

So, take form that what you will :D

Ac2 pulled there own form of NGE lol,I was there and quit and didn't look back

I could expalin all of this but it would require lots of charts and graphs.  Unfortunately, none of those are "Star Warsy" or "Iconic" so we avoid using them when discussing the NGE.  Instead we'll just say SWG: NGE has been brought to you by the letter F.

SWG is gone..Fallen Earth is eagerly awaited http://fallenearth.com

I think it boils down to what I think is a simple fact..they can't fix or add the things they promised.

they have old code, new code and no one that can figure out,or knows how to merge the two(or 3) togeather in a workable order.

wish it would just die and go away so maybe me,and a lot of others can somewhat get over it..We will never forget how SOE treated us..not ever.

I personally don't see the big deal over collision detection or the ability to jump.  It's never been in the game to start with, that's just the way it was deisgned.  If anything, collision detection would just become a way to grief people.

Of course you don't mind...  Who cares that we can shoot through walls, run through each other, etc, etc, we can't jump, fall, or do any movements realistically...

Viral Marketing at its worst...

As I said, if you couldn't run through everyone or objects owned by people it'd be a very easy way to grief people.  You currently can't shoot through walls, so that's already accomplished.

Other then Jedi getting Force Jump, I have yet to hear of a good reason for so much effort being put into allowing real jumping.  Adding it as a conveniance to be able to jump over a wall isn't really a good reason.  Adding it as a combat strategy would be kinda pointless too, considering you could just use the target lock and negate the point of jumping.

Ya just the Npc's can shoot through walls lol

I find that the current dev team does deliver what they say they will deliver.

McCain for President

No money.  Short and simple.  SWG doesn't have the funds because there is not enough subs and the subs they have now are barely keeping operations breathing and they don't want to shake them up.

Basically they are letting the game die in peace and they are not going to throw the hail marry pass like UO tried to do and failed at miserably.
