Life is a journey. Death, oh now death...that is an adventure! |
Ive been following some of the forum activity lately and i have to say its silly. Firstly is this idea that more than one game cannot be successful, or better yet bashing people for liking a game. How about people getting mad when AoC patches and now works great and shows promise of being a fun semi-innovative game. Also, on the flip side the people who think WAR is now down the drain. I personaly have been of the idea that the more games that are successful the more players that come to the genre. This means more money, more companies and minds making games, and in short a richer experience for everyone. If the genre as a whole can succeed more designers will take risks and try new things. If there is money in the genre more games of varying types will be made. Why hate WoW? Its a good game, was and still is, even if you are now bored with it, chances are nearly everyone posting has played it. I have been in and out WoW since release. I hope AoC launches as smoothly as it now promises because i would love to play that too. And i hope WAR has similar results. Wouldnt it be better for the industry to have i dont know 4 or 5 leading titles (diff. genres, play type, graphical requirements, pvp or pve etc. or a blend). I love the idea that if one year im bored with a game there is another large and very good game that i can dive into that delivers the same community and devotion as my last large popular game provided. Its just silly to forum and game bash, when really would be better and more appealing to new players if there was a large variety of well managed and populated games to choose, and no nothing wrong with subing to more than one...its not like the game is ure wife....if u want sleep around on it. Sorry for wall of text and rant, but has been bothering me. Peace. |

its usually cos people spend allot of time on a certain mmo so it becomes a part of their life...so people feel like theu have a right do defend it and insult other games...
kinda like the british insulting the frensh....and the USA insulting everyone :p for no reason :p

I try just to ignore it all. Why read the stuff? As far as I'm concerned most of the game bashing falls into the same status as trolls. Don't feed them. If there is a specific compplaint I will attempt to address it if I know the game, other wise... who cares?

I was hoping to avoid the fire, just really wanted people to think a bit differently before they go throwing stuff around forums. Thats all, but yes i do try to stay out of it, and i try to really only read the construcitve stuff, but occasionaly some of the things said just hurt my lil brain. |

I dunno, I actually find both bashing and uber fanboy-ism to be informative....once you learn how to read it. Here's the thing: Both sides have truth, and plenty of it. Both sides also obscenely exaggerate the truth to serve their particular end of the debate. All you have to do is read the material presented with a sort of exaggeration filter, and its fine. Lets take a recent example. AoC! I've seen plenty of posts which suggest the game crashes 24-7 and that the load and lag are enough to warrant making a few sandwiches and grabbing a beer in between them. This isn't true, of course. Using my super filter-delux...I can read that and see that the game is experiencing some pretty large performance problems on some systems. I can also read that some of them are quite major, and that it is best to look up information about the game before playing it, even after release, in order to be sure there aren't any hold-overs from the beta that can be easily remedied. I DO NOT read that and assume the game will crash every other second, or that the loads will be insane. Another example: SOE People like to say they butcher everything, hell I'm one of them. But, when you read this kind of bashing...you must do so with the the mind to remove exaggeration. Primarily...SOE only butchers IP's which aren't their own. Even then, a great majority of the butchering occurs before they even get to it. Now, they do make HUGE and IGNORANT mistakes...but to suggest they have killed everything is silly. They did well with EQ...and actually went back over EQ2 and made it substantially better. Notice, both of those are IP's THEY had full control of from the start. Now...that still does nothing to remove my hate for how they view their players...but my hate is also not being tainted by exaggeration.
Moral here is this: Don't whine about the posts man! Stand up, think for a second, and realize that human beings often times exaggerate EVERYTHING to some degree...especially when a debate is concerned. You could have lost a little sleep the night before...and suddenly an average day at work becomes a "God awful, horribly busy, and mind-numbing nightmare" by the time you get home to talk about it....regardless of whether or not any actual work was added to you that day. Its pretty basic social stuff here...and its so common that I actually figured most of you knew this crap already. |

''Hey now!'' - the immortal, cheesy catch-phrase of Hank Kingsly from The Larry Sanders Show. |
Originally posted by Munkyman1 One hundred percent agree with you there. I play several MMO's., and also am a member of guilds in each of them. The guild in one will slag off another game I play, and then I notice that the guildies from that other game slag off the other. Both are great games, but people become so partisan about their game that they put the blinkers on. I started playing LotR the other week, and I am really enjoying it. I told each of my guilds this and the just snorted, and slagged it off, much to my annoyance. Especially, when in actual fact I think LotR is probably a better game. I have some reasons why this snobbery might be so prevelant in gamers. Perhaps they are only willing, or can only afford one subscription, so the game they play, is THE one. They invest hundreds of hours into that game, and become very attached to it. Either way, it is still a narrow-minded viewpoint to not even give other MMO's a chance, and to actively want them to fail. As the OP said, if other games in the genre are a success, then our community grows, and thence more games, and more innovations.

The reason alot of bashing happens is, I play game A but many guildmates are getting excited about game B which is launching soon. I must slag off game B as much as possible despite the fact I know next to nothing about it, the reason being I'm afraid my guildmates will leave game A and I'll be alone. This is a major reason for bashing. As for fanboism there can be the, I play game A but not many/enough play it. So If I advertise it as much as possible I can have people to play with, also slagging off games to get people to leave | |
