Originally posted by Gutboy That's a good question. To me the lack of people in areas like Theed represent a fundemental change in gaming philosophies between pre-CU and NGE. On one hand we have the pre-CU philosophy of emersion through interdependency and social networking. and on the other hand the NGE offered a more instant form of action at the expense of a sense of community. The beauty of the pre-CU philosophy was that it brought all people together in specific areas (and there were a lot of those specific areas) that normally wouldn't have that interaction. At places like Theed you would have your traders, entertainers, doctors, and combat charcters all mingling together - and all without the limitations of levels! That to me is what an MMO should be - dynamic, social, and diverse. |

Originally posted by Thunderous I did say that Flurry had a decent population compared to Sunrunner and Tarquinas. Compared to a normal MMO, the player numbers were dreadful on all the servers. Compared to pre-NGE, even Bria had fewer players around than the lowest population servers. They need to consolidate down to about three or four servers very badly. Unfortunately, the current combat system, combined with the engine and the outrageously obnoxious particle effects (even with the particle option set to minimum), the servers couldn't handle the many people on the same server. Even at four servers, the game's population would be poor compared to most other MMOs. I fully agree that SWG's combat is broken and dreadful. SWG is still easily the worst MMO I've ever played. |

Yeah in the current game, there's no reason to be there or any other major city other than missions. But before the NGE and CU, Theed was a major marketing hub, lots of artisan professions were there to advertise, trade and sell things while Coronet was more of an entertainer and doctor buffing place with a few slicing smugglers loitering around the corner of the starport. Theed was also a great social location, people hung out there to chat for a few hours and same went for the Coronet starport when shuttles were 10 minutes.

Star Wars Galaxies, R.I.P. NGE was your final death blow. |
Well I been reading this thread and am surprised noone else has said this before...maybe some thought it but refused to say it...
Shame on you vets for logging back in! :P You honestly didn't think there would be anything of substance to bring you back did you? For the OP... you saw all those ppl on the servers because they were like most here...trying that free trial yet again... Soe has dropped the free trial gimmick on us several times since the NGE...don't fall for it. Of course...I'm saying this ONLY half way seriously, because I myself am tempted time and time again to try it...but I refrain due to time constraints..lol. I've tried like 8 other MMo's since SWG (PRE NGE and PRE CU) and none compare to what it was. NONE. I've been popping my head in this forum for over 2 years now..... sigh.... I come in here hoping to see some new update or news about SMED being fired or quitting.... That guy needs to be sent packing. And so does Torres....He smirks and gives that cocky grin whenever he talks about us vets...he thinks were dogs. There a guy who needs sent packing too.

Originally posted by Faxxer The main reason I logged in to the trial was in response to the most recent, and still ongoing, push by the lonely current players of SWG to mislead people into thinking the game has gotten better and people should sign up and play. I logged in, looked around on a couple servers, and gave the combat system a spin. I can say, with 100% honesty, that the game still sucks. It is easily the worst MMO on the market today. I sacrificed some of my time to spare others the annoyance of doing the same. The game is flat out bad and everyone who is currently paying to subscribe to it should be ashamed of themselves because they are keeping a horrible product alive, which increases the chance of some poor uninformed soul will waste his or her time and money on it, and not realize the mistake they have made until too late. The only redeemable function of the game is that it provides a place for untalented game developers to congregate without doing damage to other MMORPGs. Unfortunately, there is no mechanism in place to prevent said untalented game developers from going elsewhere and making poorly conceived and implemented 'additions' to other games. Someone should build a wall with razor wire around SOE Austin to prevent escape.

Here are the hurdles SOE must overcome to win me back to SWG, and once you read them, you'll know I'm never coming back: 1. Categorical legally binding pledge that they'll never erase player achievement like they did on 15 November 2005. They must promise a full refund of all subscription fees from the instant the pledge is made if they ever reneg on it. 2. Restoration of preCU SWG. 33 professions, Jedi by unlock, death to overt levels, restoration of three HAM bars, and a Force bar for Jedi. Restoration of CH with three critters out. BM system scrapped; return to taming, return of BE as the critter creator. 3. Loot based economy scrapped, return to player based economy. Loot schematics good; actual loot weapons and armor BAD. 4. DEATH DEATH DEATH to pseudo FPS artificially sped up to seem faster combat. I don't care how much LA whines, they're overruled on this. Of course, these conditions are such that I'll never come back, because SOE/LA will never admit publically how badly they screwed the kusak with the NGE. Especially the arrogant asses of Lucas Arts. |
