My first character in beta was a conquerer. I usually start with a basic fighter to get the feel of the game. I was reading the "button masher" comments about combat and was thinking that was going to be true. That was until I hit 10th level. I had several combos and took a feat that caused a greater chance of a "special effect". I found suddenly I was being very strategtic about what combos to hit and when. I would say I was actually interacting more with the combat than any MMO I have played. As I progressed through to 13th level (where it promptly suggests you pre-order) I found the combat to be less button mashing and more watching where the defense was and picking a good combo. I could tell the difference in how quickly I took down and enemy as opposed to just randomly hitting the various combos.

Randomly- could take down one enemy but if more had a good chance of getting killed.

selecting combos tactically- could take down two or three enemies a level or two higher.

I tested this in the quest where you head up to the volcano to talk to the slave master.  tactical combat does make a big difference.

Anyone else agree or disagree?

"For evil to triumph.. good men have to do nothing" - Edmund Burke

I have not played but sounds like almost every game. The first few levels do not indicate whatsoever what the game is like. However, it's good to hear it is not. Last MMO I heard was supposed to be a great PvP experience was Fury, and all you did was spam keys, which is not genuine PvP.

Thanks for the insight, however.

I agree. The new combat system really adds a new fresh dimension to MMORPG battle.

Instead of just pressing 1, 2, 3 ... you actually have
to pay attention to what you are doing. I always try
to move around to make the multiple NPCs stand
infront of me. That way I can hit them all (and not just one) due to the AE effect of weapons.

The combat system is new, needs tweaking etc
BUT it's good from the start which is enough for
me to enjoy fighting.

Refuse to lose.

It surely makes a diference

You must always hit the unshielded side. And combos should also hit unshielded side.

Hitting one side repetadly makes MOB change shield position to this side.

If you hit and kill MOB with combo that hits a side that is completely unshielded , you get FATALITY.

BUT , That is where it ends.

On my barbarian you have 4 skills - one is stun , second is dot , third is AOE swipe, forth is high DMG

this 4 skills only get more powerful versions as you level...thats about it all the way until lvl 80

...

Pretty sameish , like ever MMO , just that skills are less special - and you have pretty cumbersome task of executing combos.

Only good thing is that pressing 123QE , is bit more active than pressing icons -

so you are less likely to fall asleep at keyboard

Clench all you want, it''s still going in.

completely agree with the OP...and it only gets better the further you go.

Oh, and Lobotomist...you havn't seen very much of the game yet. You'd eventually need several hotbars.

Retired at 45, are you?

will agree with you.

playing a bear shaman, button smashing is a no no with this class if you want to survive 2 to 3 targets at once (and then still squished) but ya watching for the openings and using the right combos, or any combo for that matter yields nice damage to one or more. and the fatalities are a old, but neat trick.

can you smell that?!!...............there is nothing quite like it.....................the smell of troll in the morning............i love that smell.

Seconded, 'cept from the perspective of a Herald of Xotli.

I played a Guardian first, and did feel I could get away with a bit of "button mashing" when I got lazy against multiple targets.

As my Herald of Xotli though, watching for and creating openings seemed much more like a necessity than it did some sort of unneeded bonus. Mainly against multiple targets.

Not to mention the Herald of Xotli seems to have a lot less stamina than pure melee classes, so a combo wasted against a guarded direction sucks in a piled up situation.

Yes ?

At lvl 13 Barbarian i have - vicious strike I , vicious strike II , vicious strike III , vicious strike IV

So yes...i would need several hotbars if skills continue that way ( and they do )

But here is the question :

Why should i ever use vicious strike I , if i have vicious strike IV ?

because of cool downs on skills, i use 4,3,2 then 1 if the side was unshielded for that strike
