As long as it doesn't interfere with Bioware making their new Star Wars MMO, I have no problems. I'd rather see Bioware's KOTOR:Online come out first. __________________________________________________________________________________________ |

That being said, I think that some great ideas have been posted here about how the HP:MMO should play. If any Devs are lurking out there - that have been considering this MMO - they should take heed. I've discussed this excact topic with my friends (all MMO & TT RPG geeks) on multiple occasions. Done properly it could be a phenominal game. There really is an expansive world to utilize, a long history, as well as many player characters and themes to chose from. Progression through a character that ages and learns - and can become good or evil - is a creative idea for an MMO, too (and I assume would work much like Fable did?). Given the proper rights and a great Producer/Dev team (Turbine!) - and an expansive server system - it could be a real [WoW] killer. I'd play it, and I'm extremely picky when it comes to my MMOs. Just my 2¢ - Currently I'm holding out for Stargate: Worlds.

I really think this would be a great idea. Although instead of just fighting in wars and such I think there should be more of a story line for a range of different plays. This may be too hard to create except I don't think I would play it much if it was all wars.

yeah i agree, harry potter isnt all about wars. I think the storyline should be set about at the time where the last booki finishes. Like you can make your characters start there first year at hogwarts with harry's kids and make up a new story. I think it has a lot of potential and i cant wait until some1 makes up the game!! a harry potter online game |

A Harry Potter MMO should revolve around Hogwarts, imho, since that's the setting of the books, and that's what most people are familiar with. The immense world should be available for different quests and missions and so forth, but the bulk of the gameplay should be school-based, just with a lot of field trips and independent study. Figure about 3-6 months of heavy playing to be a "year" of Hogwarts, so you have two years to improve the school and develop the World of Harry Potter expansion for graduates to go work for the Ministry of Magic or become a dark wizard of one sort or other... or some other career path. If the school gameplay is dynamic and engaging, if classes are fun and challenging, if students have chances to travel and get involved in larger than life adventures, then you can balance low level wizards against each other. If you make the school a footnote, or just a tutorial level, then you need to balance high caliber wizards against each other in a, more or less, generic magical setting. Either that, or you have 'graduates' who aren't actually more powerful than the students seen in the books. Speaking of a tutorial level, it would be cool if certain checkpoints and actions and inactions in the tutorial determined, or helped determine where the sorting hat would put you.

I cant vote on your poll, there is no option to click "vote" under the yes and no. FYI, I chose yes. Also whats all the hate here about Harry Potter ? And who says its just for kids ? I first discovered the whole Harry Potter phenomina from a 78 yr old woman. I worked at a Radio Shack part-time back in college. One of my co-workers was this 78 yr old woman. Anyway, I went in the back one time to get something for a customer and she was back there on her break. She was reading a Harry Potter book that had just come out. I think it was the 3rd one, right before any of the movies had come out. My son was 7ish at the time and hadnt really gotten into the whole Harry Potter craze so I didnt know much about it. Still, I figured if the books were appealing to a 78 yr old woman, then maybe it wasnt just a "kid" book. I bought the 1st one right as the movie had come out. I was instantly hooked. I quickly caught up with the other 2 books. From then on, launch day my family was at the local Barnse and Noble bookstore at midnight to snatch up our two copies. Movie premiere, same deal...always attend the midnight showings. Im 39 yr old father and family man and yes I love the Harry Potter series. And I would definitely play a Harry Potter MMO. I dunno if I would like the whole game to be centered around Hogwarts but I would definitely be onboard to play. And I bet those here making fun of Harry Potter would secretly play too |

I'm wondering if there might be more steam behind this now that Turbine has signed a deal with Time/Warner....

Why not instead of sparking anything controversial about what happens after the books end or ruin the story by putting you in the events of the books and movies, go with a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic type thing and have the game take place some time in the past. I'm sure Warner Brothers could create something like this with Rowling writing the story line and have Warner Brothers hire game developers to create the game itself......IDK just throwing the idea out there, any responses??? |

i vote yes but they better do damn well with it to keep me
one thing they would have to do is expand on the harry potter universe including more then just the school and the fairly limited locations harry visits within the story . they would have to build upon and expand it alot outside of the story perimeters to be a successful mmo perhaps even include the other magic schools around the world i would suggest they propose the idea directly to J. K. Rowling and do research within the harry potter fan base to come up with a viable and working sustainable world complete with witches wizards and muggles magic and intrigue and secrecy with out doing so your bound to end up with just another generic mmo
you see in something as widely popular as HP if you are to put it into a MMO format you run into the same problem SWG ran into when they streamlined there character creation i think it would be very hard to create a HP mmo that is successful but very doable if they approach it right

Perhaps make the character creation similar to classic SWG? Able to learn any skill (magic, potion, flying, whathaveyou), with the right amount of training and etc. And yes, perhaps other schools, such as the ones featured in the one with the.... uhh... god I cant remember HP lore/Movie. Think where that kid celdric died. Hope that makes sense hehe.

K.'s sayso of course ) even chance to have your character become one of these famous witches or wizards just a after thought lol :D Edit: (had to add to it lol) make it something special not like the stupid lederboards that some people just dont care about make it so that only ounce a year opportunity to be added to the list of famous witches and wizards is available to only one from the player base and that one is hand picked by J. K. her self based on tests of ingenuity and resourcefulness such as the tri wizard tournament from the books or from GM IN GAME generated quest lines(not something that you see much of lol) :D just an idea :D lol its so bad as someone who used to be in game design i cant stop thinking about ideas for this as i am trying to get to bed lol :P |

I have been thinking about the design of such a game, but there is one major problem, and by major I mean one that I don't think could be over come.
The problem with Harry Potter, is that it is a story, that encompases huge amounts of time, places, and scenarios. The reason fans of Harry Potter like Harry Potter is well, the story that is being told, obviously. I could go on and on but then no one would read it.
The first thing that came to my mind was, well, why not have every player go through their 7 years at Hogwarts? But, who is going to play a game for 7 years? Make the time shorter. What are you going to do after you're out? Make the game just in the universe of Harry Potter, and you can simple do what you want. How about a game set during Voldomorts first rise to power? Or how about it after he has been defeated?
What will the skill system be like? Of course if you had school years, that would definatly make it easier. Each year you get more skills and so on. But at year 6-7 everyone is just going to be spamming Avada Kedavra right? Well maybe not if you just make it usable on NPC's, but then everyone in the game would be on the same side and I know people will want to play Death Eaters.
Another thought would have everyone always be in school and for fights or whatever have them compete in duel tournaments. But then that game would be so limited and narrow no one would want to play it. With todays gaming mood, it has to be open world of die.
I feel that this MMO can't not be done at all, until someone invents a new generation of MMOs. It has to be something that hasn't been done before, but I doubt any company would want ot take that kind of risk with that much money to try and figure out a whole new science of gaming.
Maybe I am just a little bit |
