Hey people,

I am a 3d artist and I have been thinking of branching out now for a few years   and am putting together some, very basic ideas for an mmorpg.  I've had some pretty solid ideas about a mideval type fantasy world, but So much has been done with online games in this setting that I'm thinking of stepping away from the fantasy setting.  The problem is that the other common setting is Sci-fi, and I think I'd have a harder time concepting a sci fi game because I only like a few sci-fi type games, movies, books...So basically I was just wondering what you would like to see more,  A game with a sci-fi or a fantasy setting?  Or of course something totally different(if so what)?

Personally, I like the idea of a wild west MMO.  If you're going to develop something, do something NEW.  Don't just re-hash the same old stuff that everyone has done or is doing.  This is one of the main reasons that I'm really looking forward to The Agency.

Prepare for Trouble!
Makeing Double!
BIG Trouble!

Hey Josh

I like fantasy and sci-fi as much as the next guy, what i feel is more important in an mmo is not the type, but how it treats its players

for instance,

I dread Blizzard Entertainment for every Race Lore they rape, and the never ending stream of new content, with the same epic loot... I guess I only play it for the Chat with others, because for me WoW have lost its fun when illidan got raped by fastest pve raid guild... and i am prolly gonna buy WotLK, i am zombie

My oppinion is If you wanna do real good, u must consern the game content first, make it really "cool" ya know ^^ and then also make new content, with new aspects.. but dont forget your old content. Be good to ya Players,  make it a joy to go online in your game.

the genre doesnt really do much to the likes of me

and then after this planning, you can consider the acctual Lore of the Game

I feel aslong as the Game Consept is cool, then i dont give a damm about the Genre

As I dread Blizzard so much, idd love to see them get nailed by a REAL good fantasy mideval type of game!

I wish you the best winds.

Thank you two for the opinions.  I don't know if i could pull off a good 'western.'   Though there are a million different interpretations of the west and just countess cowboy stories and legends, I do not know how great  my storyline would be...cnsidering it technically acually happened.  I just don't think historical fiction could ever really be my area of expertise.   But I totally agree that its an apealing somewhat uncharted area fo\r game settings.

(to the second guy) I very much agree with you that before   you work to much on a story line you must focus on certain game mechanics, butt when you get to a certain point, you need to know what kind of storyline your trying to follow.  If you don't, you may end up with exactly the aspects of the game that you dislike about WoW.  Where the classes, races, and storyline seem to just be thrown together and not quite all fit.

I think a good mmorpg requires up to date smooth graphics, a well written and smooth soryline that is always coming out with excellent blockbuster sequels, great gameplay(meaning interface, very smoothh with little lag, good controls, good animations...etc...),  but Almost every mmo I've ever cam acroossed is lacking at leat one if not all of those.

There is also the fact that (for me) I want a familiar game that I can play and feel at ease with after a long day, but I also am looking for a unique in depth game to keep me intigued and entertaine on the weekends...

So keep the feedback coming I mean would a fantasy, sci-fi, tweaked Western, or other keep  you playing?  In terms of a storyline?

just wanted to let you know it's "input" not "imput" .

Not trying to flame, but don't be offended if someone flames you and calls you uneducated.

peace,

I'll leave you with this:

Don''t mock me my friend. It''s a condition of mental divergence.

Well if you were playing a game, better yet living in another world what would you want it to be like.

I am not avoiding your question, but what I find useful is to think where I would like to live/adventure.

Just start constructing a setting with whatever you like in it,  I am not saying make the setting random, unless you want to that is, but if you liked cowboys, space ships and magic you could always have magic weilding space travelers with a cowboy aesthetic.  You can meld different things together and make it make sense, for example Shadowrun, magic and cyberpunk don't usually go together but with the aesthetics and the way it is explained it does not seem out of place.

I wouldn't worry about genre, let game sites worry about what to call your setting, trying to make a game a particular setting will only constrain your creativity, but if you happen to create a setting that fits neatly into a genre so be it.

The one thing that will kill a setting fast is if it does not seem like it fits together, for example the setting of this anime called Wolf's Rain I found a little hard to shallow and I had trouble enjoying the show because in the back of my head I always thought, this just does not make sense.

Thankyou, thats good advice...don't know if its what i am looking for.  I am  kind of wantiing more oppinionated responses on what people like or dislike, and want to see in the story behind of game, and also what story type do people pictture themselves playing?  Because i want to make an mmorpg , multiplayer being the keyword, it's not for my eyes only

That's actually GREAT advice Cactusman.  Nice post.

Josh,

Read this thread that I posted not long ago - I asked a similar question and got about 4 pages of pretty good response.
