Before you go overboard on Eve, I would point out there is only still about 220k-250k subs to the game.  Which still makes it a niche game.

Now, thats not to say Eve is a bad or poor game. It's not. But it still appeals to only a 'relatively' small number of people compared with WoW. I've tried it now twice, and just couldn't keep with it.

Building communities, which WoW do a crappy job at. That is the first and foremost rule of mmo. Without the community, there is no mmo. So Kilmar's argument hold some merit, allthough maybe worded a little wrong

There must have been some compelling reason to do that. That's like dating someone for 3+ years and then saying "I never liked dating her in the first place".

First, Sovrath ... if only I had a dime for every 'WoW sucks root; trust me I played for years' post.

Eve is a niche game, but it's also one of the few sandboxes on the market. Players bemoaning lack of character development freedom should at least give Eve's trial a go. Also, imo, those sub numbers will greatly increase once CCP implements Ambulation.

Still though having 220k subscriptions is pretty good; particularly considering those numbers have been sustained. Looking at Sir Bruce's charts all MMOs are dwarfed by WoW. While subscriptions are important, I think other factors should be considered. For example, you know CCP is very unlikely to fundamentally change the game to appeal to the broader market, as SOE did with SWG.

i played it for nearly 2 years (before bc), i went back recently (but am now banned) and they are constantly making the game easier and easier...its not even a challenge anymore....raids and bosses require no skill at all...just to blast them with everything you got.

People ruined the MMO. Through the Everquest model which DAoC and WoW copied to find success.

Now everyone thinks we must grind out character advancement as the entire and only purpose of the game. UO, for its early creation was a much better game in many respects not because it was more polished or anything, but because the core of the game focused on allowing players to do so much more and no one since then has a clue about the many diverse things needed in an MMO.

If we went by the logic of, "only the vets really know what a MMO is supposed to be like..." cars shouldn't have seatbelts, power steering or automatic transmisions, because we all know cars are supposed to be just like how they started.

Go find someone that can say with a strait face that a ModelT is a better car than say a 08 Camry.

UO was a ModelT.  No one knew what a car or MM
