one that will come from a relatively unknown company, with unknown people who do it, not for profit, but for a love of the game.

It is my belief that being limited by the demands of investors limit creativity and often result in games that are released WAY too early, often leading to their unfortunate demise.

It's my hope that soon, one will rise from the ranks that will establish itself as a true, 3rd generation MMO.

Are there any takers out there?

The next big MMO will be AOC I'm afraid. It will soon be all about the big 3.

AOC

WoW

WAR

Then Blizzard will come along and announce their next MMO and it'll be all about that. I don't see much hope for BioWare TBH.

I gotz a 300,000 BTU WTFBBQ!

Not that it'll ever happen, but I'd really like to see a sandbox MMO.  Straight skills, set in the movies of Indiana Jones.

Have you played AoC?  It makes for a great XBox 360 game, but as far as PC MMO's go, there's too much instancing, and for the first 20 levels WAY too much being led by the nose.

Don't get me wrong, the graphics are amazing, the combat system is different (though not as revolutionary as I thought it would be), and it will earn it's NC-17 rating.

If you like playing many alts to try different classes, you will have to play through the first 20 lvls single player game each time, unless you get one character to lvl 80.  The death animations are REALLY cool, but if you have multiple enemies on you, it can actually cause you to die as you dramatically remove someones head from their shoulders due to his three friends still wailing on you.  There is a LOT of instancing, something that I personally don't like in an MMO because it ruins the immersion factor, though there are those out there that this doesn't bother.  The last point is more a matter of personal taste.

The game has a very console feel to it.  It's not a bad thing, but unfortunately after pining for this game for years, following it's every move, I've decided I'm going to let it pass.  Would I recommend that people try it out?  Most certainly.  Will it do new and different things?  Somewhat.  Is it the "Almighty WoW killer?"  I don't think so.

I believe it will have a firm and loyal fan base.  I think the customers that Funcom gets, they will keep.  But I don't believe the game will have a broad enough appeal to come anywhere near WoW's numbers.

WAR I can't comment on just yet due to NDA.  I don't mind saying this due to the Open Beta going on.

I will reiterate that it will be a smaller studio that will look at what players want, without having people in business suits breathing over their shoulders that will come up with the next big thing.  This site has listed on it WAY too many games that are only rehashing what's already been done.

There's plenty of good ideas and just as many viable licenses that can be made into some great MMO's.  It is how these companies proceed that will dictate whether they succeed or not.  To be honest, I grow bored with the majority of offerings.  I'm praying (and PRAYING) that someone comes out with something that will shock us like a cold splash of water on a really hot day.   It will offer something for everyone, appeal to multiple facets of online gaming, and allow for a TRUE sense of online community, not the hollow husk that seems to be the mainstay of a lot of the current MMO's.

Great discussion though, and please keep the points coming.  This is why we are here. :)

My bet goes on CCP's World of Darkness MMO.

Subscribtions: EVE, WOW, DDO, VG, AOC, COV, FFXI, GW, RFO
+plenty of F2P, betas, trials

On my radar: Earthrise, DF, Mortal Online, JG: Evolution

i think the next big mmo will be for the new generation of mmo players it will be there first and long after we all have moved on they will take our place on these boards probebly asking the same questions and getting the same answers:)

Some lead and some follow I prefer to stand beside!

If by big you mean sub numbers than it won't be by a company that is totally unknown. My money would be on WAR having the second highest sub number to WoW, and then when 38Studios finished their MMO, with the artist who does the Spawn comics among other things, and with the writer known as R.A Salvatore, it will likely be a huge hit.

I can't imagine a project with the both of them working on flopping. 38studios.com

Certainly not AoC. What I read in the posts from the NDA breakers, makes it quite sure that this game will be so-so at best, it not a total flop. It has the potential to become better over time, but without a successful start, there won't be enough funds for development after release
