you can participate in Open Beta on the 1st if you subscribe to FilePlanet and get one of the 50,000 keys they're handing out.

Oh wait thats not open beta.

Open Beta will start May1st and run until something around the 17th. In order to get a Beta Key you must be a paid member of the Fileplanet community.

There's no open beta scheduled for AoC.

Depends on how you look at it. Anyone could sign up for the Open Beta, you just had to pony up for a paid account. Not Funcom's fault if people are to cheap :). Really, though, it's all just semantics. Some will say its not truely open because you have to pay for something, others will say nothing is free anymore. I look at it this way, Funcom is calling it Open Beta, so thats what it is.

Paying to beta test is too sad for words. I guess the hype makes it ok oh wait it doesn't

I don't think its sad at all. Funcom saw an opportunity to make a deal with IGN to get a ton of advertising for their game and in exchange help make IGN some more money. It sucks for the consumer, but thats the way the world works and I think in the future we are just going to see more of this type of stuff. If it bothers you so much then don't pay for open beta, heck don't buy the game, that will show them. I know everyone thinks its their right to whine and complain about such things, but if you care so much then why don't you go out and make a game that people will buy, and then you can do whatever you want with it.

No what is too sad for words is that people still don't understand this principle and the idea; and that they have to keep repeating the same arguments because people with their snippy one-liners don't bother to read.

Funcom has explain why its the case and Funcom isn't the one charging; its Fileplanet. Regardless if you agree or disagree with the charge and the reason for it, its only $7.95 for a month's membership. That is really, really cheap and means you paid about 60 cents a day to test the game. So I am going to skip buying a candy bar and its the same amount of money!

Being in a beta test is a privlege and regardless of  who it is selected, its an open beta because anyone can apply and get in (in this case if you are lucky enough to get a key). Its a limited beta but nonetheless it is open.

WOW used Fileplanet as did other games and these same arguments arose then. And I see it not as paying to beta test a game, I see it as being able to secure a spot in beta and download faster. But again, its just semantics.

Had Funcom done an "anyone can try it" open beta, you would probably be on these forums complaining about lag in game and that they let too many people into the open beta. See, some people are never happy and always want to complain.

That has to be one of the most logical arguments I have seen on the AoC forums lately. Good show man, good show...
