All I have to say on the non-success of this game, is why name it Pirates of the Burning Sea, when the pirate faction is the worst at combat, aside from merchantmen, which aren't meant to fight.

All the factions should have had very significant advantages (and perhaps disadvantages as well) or differences that would make the factions better at different things. As it stands, all the naval officers are more or less the same, with pirates and merchantmen more or less ineffective. There is really no reason to play either of those factions, as NOs are better at combat than pirates, and only marginally worse at trade than the merchants. Which would change the name to NOtBS, ironically enough.

This game seriously needed more time on the drawing board, to make everything worth playing. It needed about 90% fewer instances and something more to the gankfest that is combat.

With such fundamental weaknesses in design, is it any surprise that this game did not succeed?

hehe I called is "SOL's of the Burning Sea" so yeah I think many have realized that there is basically one rulling class and that is the naval officer.   I was a freetrader and was getting close to 50 but all I could see was people switching to naval officer.  I would go to port battles and it was simply a contest who who could bring the most Ships of The Line.  Well since freetraders dont really have SOL"s as they are not naval officer that made them redundant.   I had a friend who when I told him I was at least useful for my buffs he forgot that I was trying to justify my existance in Line battles for ports and started telling me how naval officers had the same thing.   It didn't take me long to leave after that.   In any event yeah its just a contest of naval officers.  The pirates spec that way too mostly and they spend their time trying to acquire SOL's via capture.  OUtside that there is not that much more to the game anyhow.  Its a very narrow scope so that part has to be REALLY fun or its a waste.   Most people who continue to play feel its just an okay game and are really waiting for something better to come along.   Add to that its pve unfriendly and really mostly ganktastic it only accomodates one type of player in the end.    Lets just say it does not accomodate the bulk of players and it can get pretty borring pretty fast.  I dont even consider what is going on PVP its just so broken to me anyhow.    Not everyone feels that way but anyone I play games with does and leaves fairly quickly.

"In lag, no one can hear you scream"

There was a time in beta when many, if not most, played privateers. Then they got nerfed and navy got buffed. Navy could become immune/invincible for 60 seconds (30 invinc and 30 final defense). Then navy got buffed further and can become unsinkable for 1 minute and 45 seconds. So, all things considered, navy > *.

I still remember a post that I read somwhere by the guy who claimed to be present in beta and leavign before release. All in all he simply stated in few lines that game gets boring quickly and in PvP NO wins over all.

Yep, he was right, too bad I cannot remember the source.

Whomever that was, sounds like he was right .

It is just amazing to me how fast this game went down. Not one of the people I knew that bought the game are still playing, and there were over twenty of those. The guy who played the longest finally gave up, and the game didn't look any different, in a fundamental way, from the beta days.

Alot of people wanted this game to be good, it just wasn't.

Oh well, looks like there's another corpse in the $OE graveyard.

Say what you want, freetraders can be extremely deadly when they are played in their proper role.  :)

Although for the most part I agree with you, naval officers are too god-like.  In the "balanced discussion" thread, I noted the problem with the economy, as freetraders have little to no advantage currently.
