It wasn't really the NGE that killed SWG, it was the nails in the coffin. The released CU was what killed SWG. The CURB would have made SWG the million customer game, but they did the CU instead. Instead of working with the code base they had they butchered it over and over and over. So we got the CU, then the NGE. |

To me, the CU was a pretty solid ground to work upon. I was a TKM/MSM/Med in the Pre CU because I felt that the profession that I wanted (Carbineer) was kind of broken. The CU fixed Carbineer and kind of evened out melee and ranged, so I have no complaints there. Also, being able to hit all the bars never did make much sense to me. Think about it. Health should be the only attackable bar, while action would be used for abilities and mind for healing. That's what I think at least. So I don't blame the CU for anything, it's the NGE that I blame for the death of SWG. It can't rest in peace because SOE keeps the facade NGE running on bare minimums. |

The CU was the beginning of the downfall. It was the first step towards taking the game away. It also was developed in secret and had deceit around it... Literally up till the last minute when it was thrown on TC we were told that we were getting the CURB, which would have kept the Pre-Cu system but improved it. The CU system was completely different. Was it a bad game? No, like most, I adapted to the CU and eventually got to like it, though never as much as the original. In hindsight it should have been obvious with the ferocity they rammed the CU down our throats that they no longer cared one bit about the existing sub base, they were going after another even then and didn't feel any need to listen to us at all. IMHO, I think the CU was developed as a "throwaway", it was a first step needed to move from Pre-Cu to the NGE. They had to convert our characters into levels, our items into ones much simpler, etc. I say this because even as crappy as the initial NGE was, it clearly had to have been in development at the time the CU was on TC...

I know this could piss of a lot of vets here, but Jedi killed the game. We had 30+ professions to mix and match with a great crafting system, resource gathering, and economy. Throw in an alpha class that doesnt wear armor, makes their own weapons, can tank, heal, and do superior ranged and melee dps... grats, you just killed your game.
Let me rephrase that: The failure to follow through on Jedi prema-death is what killed SWG. Honestly, why make a game with so much diversity, so much freedom, so many choices, and a beautiful interdependency on other classes just to come out with a stand alone class that doesnt really NEED anybody? |

agree to OP, i have only extended my subscription during the CU, to see CU elements taken away and PRE CU installed. NGE took any hope for this game to become worth playing then... |

I have to agree and disagree here. It wasnt just the CU or the NGE that that hurt SWG. It was the way they treated us about issues that really needed fixed. From the start the game was filled with bugs and glitches. It had problems but we all managed to work around them and enjoy the game, I mean hey it was Star Wars. The CU and the NGE just gave us something of substance to bite. After all there never was a fancy abbreviation for rubber-banding. But for me the biggest killer was when the jedi (as in anyone could become one) were set free. That one addition hurt the feel of SWG more then anything and brought in a player base less concerned with the RP and the dynamics of the world and turned SWG from a mmorpg into a game. |

I liked the CU. But I wasn't a big crafter either and I can easily see why they didn't. The CU combat towards the end was the best we've seen in SWG. The CURB would have been great as well and would have made the game a competitor today for 500,000+ subscriptions. |

Yup, the CU is what hooked the fish and pulled it out of the water...the NGE is the club that whacked the fish over the head. |
