Re-writing the combat engine would require a lot of code as well. They only have 4 of them, of similar inexperience. Simply put, the expertise of the Dev team has deteriorated too far for significant (and thus potentially game saving) changes CANNOT happen. They say "no more NGE like changes" only to spin this inability as a positive. That also is a lie, the current changes to Jedi on the TC amount to "NGE like changes" and that isn't stopping them from doing it.

Originally posted by Antarious I experienced similar things as well. When I started playing SWG (around pub. 7 or 8, don't remember) I played on a laptop with only 512MB and that was rather painful. After upgrading the laptop to 1GB, most problems were gone and the game played just fine. There were frame rate issues some times because of crappy graphics, but it wasn't a major issue for me. Later on I got a decent stationary rig and with that I had no problems at all. I hardly ever saw the rubberbanding and certanly no lag either. When the CU came, it wasn't just my belowed game that changed to the worse, but so did the performance of the game! It's difficult to say what had happend, but my guess is that it was server lag that suddenly got up front! Then the abomination called the NGE came and the lag got even worse! As mentioned the speed-up of the game most likely had a major role in the lag, but it was also a strange kind of lag that I haven't experienced before. I think there are more factors in the loop than just the speed-up, it's as if there were lag on all fronts. Client lag, network lag or server lag? Now when I think back at it, It's very possible that all of those factors were (are) the cause of the extremely poor performance of SWG-NGE. Anyway, whatever the cause and huge increase of the lag in NGE is compared to pre-CU, it's just another proof of what a huge failure the NGE is! The concept, the design and the implementation of the NGE is really far below any sub-standards, but then again it is after all SOE and LucasArts so what can you expect?

If I had to guess I'd say they probably knew of this issue very early on but dismissed it and tried to bury it. They had a game to sell to a new audience and having awknowledged a serious game issue would have been bad PR. Especially when tied into the release of episode 3. Tthey had to try to capture on the momentum of that, and you don't capture momentum when discussing critical issues. |

I don't think they knew when they designed it. They only figured it out after it was released and there was no going back. I guess they figured they'd somehow fix it later. Which would be quite an accomplishment, since they'd have to figure out a way to exceed the speed of light to do so :) The only way to fix it at this point involves a combination of slowing it down (to at least no more than 2 attacks per second which would be less than half the current speed) and scale up DPS. They dont' have the manpower to do this. Or the ability.

The Quick answer to all this is just to change the game back, its store on back up disks, the population would double or even triple in about a week. CU was a bad idea and as stated its a Suit some where that knows Jack about games calling the shots, once that person gets fired for the mess they have made perhaps, just perhaps we will get a Star Wars game again that is a popular as it should be.

Originally posted by lionexx It's not worth the effort, frankly. Fixing this won't save the NGE from closure. There is just too much broken and wrong about the NGE to be able to fix it all. That's why shutting it down and doing a new game that learns from the mistakes of SWG is the best course.
