"I am altering the deal, pray I don''t alter it any further." (summary of SWG) |
and on the basis of this information, have you paid for additional subscription time? Perhaps the most well know example of this would have been people who resubscribed in light of the creature handler revamp of 2005, and the marketting about new creatures and creature handler loot in the Trials of ObiWan expansion. Have you experienced this at other times in SWG? People talk about smugglers being told things, that then didn't pan out. What were they told? What other examples do you have? I seem to remember promises about the fixing and restoration of the force ranking system as well.

Yes. I was promised profession revamps. I was told the CU was "here to stay". I was told that Jedi would "NEVER be a starter profession". We were PRE SOLD an expansion with lots of nice stuff for professions that wouldn't exist 15 days later. I initially subscribed to SWG in Sept 2004... In Sept 2005 I bought an ANNUAL subscription, which bought game time on my main toon (then a Jedi) until October 2006. Jedi became a starter profession, the CU went away, and the professions revamped and promised revamps went away completely. I was not allowed a refund. I'd be willing to add my name to ANY class action suit against SOE and LEC regarding the interstate and INTERNATIONAL fraud that was and is the NGE. John Smedly and Jim Ward, as the corporate thieves responsible should be in Federal "pound me in the ass, no conjugal visits" prisons for what they did.

Originally posted by salvaje Thank you, the specifics are helpful. More input from all players is welcome. A few clarifying questions. By whom and by what means were you told the following: "the cu is here to stay" and "jedi will never be a starter profession"? Also, what professions were promised a revamp? Who made those commitments and by what means of communication? Also, what items and features were advertised specifically in the expansion that were then removed? How were they advertised, and by whom? I plan to explore legislation relevant to this information, jurisdictional issues and possible legislative gaps. Like I said in another post, I'm done a fairly large project now related to criminal law, and have some time off this summer. I can't make any promises regarding specific outcomes, but I do plan to explore this along with colleagues from other relevant fields. |

Gee lets see.... I'm not even going to get into half the things EA said and then did with Ultima Online for all my time on there and I was there at launch till 2004. We could bring up things like Halo 2 not looking like the Game Play Trailers shown before the game came out. Hey wasn't their a war or something started on misleading information! Not about gaming but hell I kinda remember something about WMD's in real life.... Oh and Half-Life 2 was due out in 2003, wait sorry 2004! Oh and that cool looking Water Monster thing wasn't in it... Ya know the one they showed in the trailers. Interplay was going to do Fallout 3, and now the Bethesda Softworks look, sound and feel like the SWG forums on a good day. Oh and back in the 1990's I played a Demo of TIE Fighter that well the full game wasn't anything like the TIE Fighter that came out in the stores! And yeah I know Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony have said things that ended up being misleading about their systems that they have done. Yeah after years and years of all of that you think I'm shocked when someone misleads people? Tell the truth I'm more shocked when someone is upfront and tells the truth about something. I mean give me a break, you can be mislead on anything as of late! |

I'm collecting all of this input for a qualitative research database. I'll be examining it from a number of sources to identify patterns. |

Originally posted by ArcAngel3Oh I also forgot a few! Daikatana would be out in 1996, I mean 1997 or wait no! 1998! Oh it was 1999! Wait I'm sorry it was 2000... Well it did come out in 2000, also John Romero was going to make me something... I forgot what it was but I think it had a B at the start of it... Also Daikatana was going to be good... Also Duke Nukem Forever was.... Oh hell it will be done when it's done! Really do I need to make up any jokes about this one? I mean Duke Nukem Forever is the master of misleading information! Hell I think over at EA they must worship this game due to all the misleading information about it! I'm guessing it will still be in the works when we have mastered Space Flight. See the thing is misleading information is all over the place, and well with any form of Entertainment things can and will change at the drop of a hat. Better still it's like seeing an ad for Taco Bell on TV and seeing that really nice looking Taco they are showing off on it. When you go out and get said Taco it's a saggy, mess! Stuff like this has been going on well before I was born, believe me it's going to be going on years after I'm dead and gone. Being mislead just doesn't come as a shock to me, I mean for all I know next week SOE may come out and say that the Smuggler stuff in Game Update 4 isn't going to happen and in it's place they are working on something new. Best way I can put it? Well I think the good Doctor House says it best "Everybody Lies". |

Originally posted by MikeMB The interesting thing about Daikatana was that the thing that tripped it up in its development seems to have been the "sidekick" concept. John Romero had a terrific concept...and it's been realized in games such as Jedi Academy and KOTOR, with the entire party/buddy thing that works. Heck, pet systems in MMOs are basically the same concept, and they can work very well indeed, in general, as we see in SWG, WoW, and other MMOs. I'm sure you'll recall the ongoing openended worldwide flame war over Battlecruiser 3000 and the litany of assertions by Derek Smart that motivated endless bickering, arguing, and flaming for years on USENET. You're right about advertising in general, it's about telling lies to sell product. I can recall controversey over Saturday morning kids' shows in the 60's and the often misleading advertising there, aimed at kids (such as myself!) who would then pester their parents for toys and cereal and whatnot. Still goes on today, will be going on tomorrow. |

Originally posted by SioBabble Althought there is a layer of truth to the obersvation that dishonesty in marketting abounds, I'm wary that the argument "everybody's doing it" could be used by unethical companies to justify their blatant disregard for honest communication with consumers. Truth be told, "everybody isn't doing it." I think you'll find that the most successful MMO's for example have a history of providing customers with reliable information. That is, of course, one of the reasons they are successful. People make purchases based on accurate information, and they aren't disappointed by what they get. Two and a half years now playing City of Heroes and not once have I been told something about the game's future that later turned out to be false. Every item or feature advertised has been implemented, and in a highly polished state. New content that is advertised in forums is always implemented. New powersets, always implemented. New loot drops, same thing. Compare this to a game like SWG. Profession revamps promised, not delivered, or professions deleted immediately following revamp. Force ranking system coming back after it's fixed...not. New item in the expansion you just purchased (Rage of the Wookies)...item disabled. New loot in trials of obiwan...profession that uses it deleted. Stats modified by new loot in expansion...stats no longer exist. Get some armour yesterday for a few million...can't wear that armour today due to game changes. Working on that quest line for 2 years and almost done...quest line deleted. Veteran reward to prevent decay...decay removed from game, item converted to something of little value, then no value as respec npc's are introduced. < | |
