I just found out about a game called Seed, that launched a few years back. From the Wiki entry:

Seed was a MMORPG developed by Runestone Game Development. Aiming for a radically different experience than most other games in the genre, the game focused on character interaction and politics to the extent that combat was entirely removed from the design.

Beta testing started on February 1st, 2006. Open beta testing started on April 25th, 2006. The game was released to the public on May 2nd, 2006.

As of September 28th, 2006, Runestone decided to file a bankruptcy petition to the court of Aarhus, Denmark. A public statement explained that the lack of money was caused by failing to achieve a partnership deal with publishers and MMO companies.

This is exactly the type of thing that I'm looking for. No grind, and possibly no combat, but still an MMORPG. There has to be a game out there like Seed, that didn't fail the same way Seed did, right?

Second Life is more of a virtual social network than a game. I'm looking for an online, multiplayer game with a persistent world, without grind or EXP points.

That's so sad. The whole concept of Seed seems amazing, too.

Yurr. Well, you could try EVE if youI’z not focused on a fantasy settin’. Dere’z no grind in dat skillz train automatically an’ you can focuz 100% on uvva aspectz of da characta (tradin’, gatherin’, etc) an’ it can be quite political if you choose to try an’ get in wiv a big guild.

Boredom is in the temperament of the beholder.

There was Myst Online: URU Live, but that has been cancelled (for the second time). The servers are due to shut down in one week.
