He's still involved in Vanguard, shortly after the collapse of Sigil SoE said they would keep him on as sort of an outside consultant. Obviously he is laying low cause his name is now mud in the industry so don't expect his name to show up in any press releases. Brad and SoE are great for each other they both suck big time. I'm sure they will both continue making lousy games for years to come.

I think Brad would be a great addition.  Brad is a great vision/idea guy but he sucks as a manager.  He is a great example of the peter principle in action.  Hopefully they have him working on VG in some back room doing what he does best, dreaming up ideas.

Why would SOE pay Brad for consultation? Especially in the midst of firing people who actually work on the game.

I never bought that story, and I highly doubt he's responsible for rest experience, quicker travel and level restricted flying mounts.

But uh, yeah, April's Fool.

Don't know why you so upset with Brad. on white paper VG was amazing, in practice that's another story... But I do have to agree, he ain't a good manager :(

and I don't want to start a flame war on what/who/when killed VG... I have my personal opinion which vary from all the new fan(s) if they are any left

I totally agree. Brad McQuiad would make a great contribution to any game.

So where do you guys get your experience to be able to judge someone on their manger abilities.  Most of you guys are pathetic really.   With a multimillion dollar project and all the variables there are many things that can go wrong....its definately not all because of one.  VG is a project that did not deliver as planned and when you all grow up and get out in the workforce you will realize your career will be filled with successess and failures.

I really wouldn't say VG is a failure when looking just at the game.  I think its great and the best MMO on the market......I think Brad did the best he could and I still think he created the best MMO since EQ.  I would love to see him return to VG.....or better yet make a new MMO....we all learn from our mistakes.

idk man, if brad came back to vanguard if that would be good or not, so far the game is heading in the right direction, But who knows, we would never know unless he did indeed come back.

If the game just doesn't sell well and is considered a failure by that measure, then I can chalk that up to a fickle market.

If the game had a lot of technical issues and failed due to those issues, then I would put that on the PM and/or key members of the team.  But really, at the end of the day, the PM is the one saddled with the burden of making sure the project is progressing as planned.

I simply don't believe the game was tested enough prior to launch.  And that could be SOE's fault.  Maybe the PM had things on track and the project end-date was bumped up considerably.  At that point, if the new 'end-date' was unrealistic, then AFTER I made every concerted effort to push that date back to a timeframe that would allow me to ensure 'quality'... I would probably wash my hands of it and walk away.

Success and failure can be measured differently from job to job or career to career.  If the company I work for rolled out software to our end users and it was in the state that Vanguard was in at launch to customers... head's would roll.

I would really have wanted to be around when EQ launched and see if we just closed the circle.

Brad is a visionary man, maybe not the leading type. I'm quite shure that Vanguard will look good on Brad's resume if Vanguard get's well receieved in the public eyes in the coming years regardless of the state one year ago.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

I have to agree with Blackwatch replied to Tones post, I'm happy he did in fact, I would have been less tactful. You are pretty dead on... I still don't see VG as a failure, maybe it's not what ppl wanted it to be "the next WoW killer". There was some good things and some bad.. still some left on both side! I did like Brad vision of the game and the original team working on it.. it's just sad how it ended up when it went retail.. but then again don't tell me you didn't see this coming a mile away. The second M$ pulled out we knew something was wrong... going back to SoE just to try to save it, probably put a lot more presure and rush to finish the product.

In the end, you either like him or not.. it's your opinion, personally I liked him, I did enjoy his vision, very happy I played it... Now would I play another MMO he made? maybe if it wasn't produce by SoE

It was part of the buy out deal with SOE when Brad sold out Sigil to SOE after their horrible launch. Also Brad was always very good friends with Smedley. They don't called it a golden parachute for nothing.

When Brad and Sigil signed up with SOE to have them along as publishers they were already 30 million in the hole. They were going to launch with our without the SOE publishing because the venture capitalists who fronted money wanted it back already after 5 years of production.

As for Brad having a good "vision" goes that is all fine and dandy but it's no better then the "vision" the creator and writers of the horrible flopped movie Water World had as well. In the end it still sucked and bombed.

One thing I always wondered is how people know how much in the hole sigil was?  I mean it wouldn't seem like sigil would advertise that?

"WE ARE AT PEACE WHEN WE ARE AT WAR, and we are always fighting"

4/03/08 9:41:34 PM#19

Okay guys...I just want to get my two cents in since there are so many people here worshiping brad mcquaid. I'm not flaming or trolling, I have every right to state my opinion because I played EQ.

Now don't get me wrong, EQ was a great game, but EQ was not a visionary game. Let me explain to you the fluke which is Brad McQuaid....

okay, there were muds before anything else.

There many people who played muds. Older people. I remember my band teacher, history teacher, and science teacher all played muds. In fact, my band teacher, when I was in the sixth grade, introduced me to them. As much as it looked like fun, there was too much reading. Then Ultima online came into the scene.  So there was a big following for a 3d mmorpg before one even came out. Now everquest is not true 3d, maybe it is, I'm not a programmer. But I remember there was alot of hype around it because it was the first mmorpg that would play like a restricted mud. A restricted mud is a mud in which there is no pvp, and no looting. At first EQ had pvp, it had full looting, and pickpocket. BEcause of the failure of these features in ultima online, it dropped them all and their pvp servers nearly died.

Enter Shadowbane, DAOC, Anarchy online, and AC - and all the people who love pvp flock away from EQ and it almost dies, except the mud players and old folks stick around. So EQ...was a timing fluke. Brad McQuaid had nothing to do with it. He got lucky.
