Perhaps scared is a strong word but back when I started playing SWG I loved to go exploring the planets. Dathomir was my favorite and in the south west corner of the planet I came across a cave that was filled with rancors. After calling on some of my buddies they came out for a look. Took them an hour to get there as vehicles wern't in the game yet and a couple died along the way. I just remember this feeling of "Impending Doom"......perhaps the atmosphere or just all the giant rancors and our low levels. It wasn't long and the group was wiped but that experience still stands out in my mind. ~Hairysun~

I haven't gotten that much into a game to actualyl be scaerd by it. But it would be something to see in the future mmo's though! The speed of the mole and the power of steel is my weapon |

Couldn't think of anything the first two times I checked this thread, but reading Souvec's post I'm reminded of something in The Saga of Ryzom: Back when there were Kitin patrols (composed of Kirosta, to be specific) in the Prime Roots (huge underground caves with pallid fauna, and ethereal glowing flora reminiscent of the deep ocean)... I hadn't been playing long, only a month or two. A friend absconded me into the Abyss of Ichor to help him forage for high-grade crafting materials by applying "care plan" actions to the material sources he prospected to prevent them from exploding (see CaesarsGhost's post). Upon entering the region, we hugged the cavern wall, slipping over to a relatively quiet corner. Found Excellent and Supreme shells. Started digging. Suddenly my friend hurried us to the farthest reaches of the corner, and as we stood as high against the wall as the ground incline allowed, about two dozen Kirosta began filing into the area from a nearby tunnel. Occasionally they stopped and looked around, mandibles twitching, as if they were nearly detecting us. Then they'd amble onward. The smaller ones scurried around the claws of the larger ones, sometimes darting outward, almost far enough to be in range of us. They all had an aggro radius approximately 30 metres longer than the average Kitin. Gradually they left, moving onward along their patrol route. Every ten minutes or so (maybe less or more, I don't recall this detail well) they'd return and we'd abandon our digging to hide in the corner again as soon as we spotted their long, moving line of creature-coloured dots on the 125m range of the compass/radar... |

Heh, was an epic spider in EQ2 named Terrortula. I was just soloing a bit and run over a sand dune and straight into it, it was so big that even a leg didnt fit on my 22" screen, and the legs were hairy too.... I guess i got a thing for MMO spiders since the only other monster that got me jumping was the first Shelob i saw in Linage a long time ago. |

WTF is a pocket monster?!? Think about it for a while. |

The Scariest monsters for me have to be the gigantic dragons in any Everquest mmo. Those things freaked me out the first time I ever saw them. One of them killed me and that day I swore revenge on it. I can't remember if i killed it though. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

males who play female toons and swear they are females in real life are creepy.....or misunderstood. Also SoE and "take overs" or "Game Improvments" that scares the heck out of me Brad McQuaid scares me Some one yelling "TRAIN!!" in early MMOs scare me. resting in AV BG then gettting worked by a epic stun rogue who knows what they are doing scares me

Anyone who played Anarchy Online might remember this one. In a mission, when everyone was just starting to heal up and get ready for the next room, someone spots a crate and opens it. All you heard was *boom!* and the shrill sound of a Roller Rat that was about 70 levels higher than the group. |

the king of all the scary monsters would have to be the dragon. as soon as you see the dark shape of the winged beast head towards you something clicks in your mind.
first time i got smashed by a dragon was in WoW. farming some little ones in the Badlands and i turned around to see a big black (even worse) dragon flying towards me. i managed to get off "oh ****" to my group before i was a corpse on the ground.
i have yet to meet a dragon that has not caused me to think twice about whether to fight it or not. its the only beast to make me consider whether it is a good idea to smack it in the face. MMO wish list: -Changeable worlds |

Asheron's Call had some scary situations - like just about every mob that would jump me, when I was trying to run through higher level areas. You run for half an hour, then get one-shotted by a tusker, hiding just over the crest of a hill, and the vitae loss was nothing compared to the half hour you just wasted, and the possible hour needed for corpse recovery. And yeah, Olthoi dungeons seemed pretty intense, once upon a time, too. Course, EQ had mobs like the Griffon in newbie areas, or trains of brutal death that would come rampaging out from the depths of Unrest. Mobs that were only a little higher level, relatively speaking, seemed so horrible and uber, back then. We were all newbies, though. Now, I don't know, same old tricks just annoy me, more than scare me. That's why the genre needs to evolve. OTOH, though, sometimes it seems like they're not even trying to scare us, anymore. Mobs are just xp cows, and making them scary is just considered fluff. Or even worse, too challenging. Wouldn't want to ruin the gameplay for any retarded epileptic grandmothers that might be playing. In any case, I can't think of anything scary in more recent MMOs. When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |
