I could go off about how MMOs are no longer virtual worlds but rather single player RPGs, but that's a different topic.

Why is it that this hasn't reemerged in new upcoming games like AoC, Aion, WAR... It seems all these developers worry about are fancy graphics and more quests. Maybe the typical MMOer jas changed, but I can't get over the fact that this isn't a massively desired feature.

Thoughts?

You need a sandbox MMO for player housing and player citys.  A gameworld that do not force you to "play" it, just exist in it.

Example: a friend of mine played SWG (pre-cu) and he didnt leave Mos Eisley the first year. He had a store (player house) and so much to do he didnt feel he needed to move.

Man...The community sure has changed since I started playing...

Housing was one of the things I always looked forward to, I thought it was one of the coolest things that an MMO had to offer.

In AC all I did was find ways to furnish my house.  I found the coolest quests...and the most memorable ones on just getting things that looked awesome on the inside of my house.  It was a place that was not only just full of junk...the stuff actually meant something...

I had to go FIND all of that stuff, and I did it.  And now I get to show it off.

It took my mind off of all the mind numbing grinding once in a while.  I can't believe how unimportant some of the posts claim ambience to be.  I think its probably the most important aspect of an MMO.  I'm not a Role Player...at all...but I want to be immersed in a game.   It keeps you interested even when there isn't any content left to go around.  No matter how much content they put into a game, it will eventually run out especially for those that speed to the end of the game as fast as possible.  So whats left? Some say PvP...but like any FPS with complete action PvP gaming its going to get boring eventually...so you gotta find something else to do...and if theres enough mystery in a game your going to find something fun even if it isn't that important.

Sorry if I got off topic...just felt like ranting a little I guess...

Oh, well, my!!  Real Sorry there about the 'tasteless attempt'(FFS!!!) to share info. about an in development MMO on MMORPG.com.(another little non-clickable link just ....for you precious. Fraking lmao).

Honestly, what right would I have, on a site entirely devoted to current and future MMO gaming info., to ever think you may actually have an interest in a title that may have closely fit your gaming needs.

As for 'tasteless', it's funny how quickly I now see you the same way.   ../raise eyebrow ../snicker

the way i see it is that MMO's kinda got ahead of themselves.  they are now backtracking to fix problems that arose a few years ago.  before almost every feature you could think of was in a development stage or released.  housing was one and only recently has games become ready to re-implement housing.  many of the features we demand were once in games.

In EQ2 there is Housing. and there is a Tradeskill profession only for building furniture. And a lot of people spend a lot of time decorating houses. The only bad side of this system is its instanced. I agree with the Op, I dont understand why this feature is overlooked on new games. Is the type of feature that gives more deep to the game.

My Man!

The only bad side of a housing system is its instanced or you are not allowed to decorate it the way you want. The only game that does housing right is SWG. I would still be playing if it was not for the NGE. but  what i am getting at is just all the stuff you could do with there housing system was great and I have yet to play a game that does it better. lets just hope some devs out there know how fun a good housing system is.

I liked the SWG housing system too except for some points; I didn't like that it was possible to pump unlimited credits into a house so that it stood (and took up space even after you'd quit) forever. I also didn't like that you just plonk them virtually anywhere and some cities just ended up ringed with empty houses. I'd have also preferred it to be limited to one house per player. Instanced neighbourhoods like LOTRO has is my preferred model.

I agree with the OP.

Player housing might be something you dont want to waste your time on, but what about once you hit MAX level?..

Oh how boring MMO's are once you hit max level.. oh yea sure there are raids to do, for what? to get even better equips?... grind blad de grind blah..

Start another character and play the whole game again?.. great!... more grind.

An MMO is about BUILDING a character! while there are sad individuals who care nothing for looks and only stats (wow, what a boring lifestyle they must lead) individuality is what makes an MMO, and individuality is indeed what makes us all humans.  Player housing or something you can build and create in the your virtual world that is unique is something creative and pleasing beyond the boring grind of killing things.  (See: Second life)

Games of the future which have the proper balance and mechanic for player housing will be the games that will be extremly popular!

Just like MMO's will soon have "flight" as standard, emulating games like Perfect World, were flight and flying combat is available, CHEAPLY to ALL characters from very early on..  soon all games will have this, just like soon games will offer all players 'player housing', cheaply, offering further content for those who wish to 'pimp' their houses.

This is the main problem at the moment, Game companies dont have the technology to alow every player to have their own houses with thousands of unique textures and models...  Vanguard is probably the ONLY MMO out there which has the real-esate in-game to alow everyone to have a house (and a boat) but Vanguard is a complete fail and will never recover the popularity (player base) it could have.

One day player housing will see its place in all mmo's worth playing, I feel its just a matter of time and technology.

My Man!

SWG has a bigger world then Vanguard if you count all the planets and they do have the ability but not the desire  WoW changed all MMOs and im not bashing but i dont think it changed it for the better.
