MMORPG Character Monuments

...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest...

I will be the first to admit, I was looking forward to BOTH AoC and WAR. I was burnt out on Warcraft, and the current crop of recently released MMORPGs have been underwhelming. HOwever, as I have been following these two games over the last year it was pretty clear that they would likely be released around the same time. As such, I was planning on Going with WAR (For many reasons, those threads abound on this board). If , for some reason, I disliked WAR I would then turn my attentions to AOC.

I will also be the first to say that WAR and AoC are two VERY different games. Very different mechanics and they appeal to different player types. However, they are equal in ONE major area...They are both NOT WARCRAFT, and I submit to you that this fact will be a major driving force.

A similar release date is longer the case. I find myself now looking at AoC and the #1 choice. To try and to embrace and If , for some reason, I disliked AoC I would then turn my attentions to WAR.

Anyone else have similar plans?

Torrential

Hey ya....

Well I have allways whanted to buy AOC, before WHs release. And now WH will not get in my way. Then there is only this feeling left in me. That say will AOC be the game for me, the game that will take over the feeling DAOC have left in me - and that I hoped for in WH.

The question only really effects those who are interested in both games and are sitting on the fence as to which one to play.  These individuals will more then likely end up getting both anyway.  If the history of video game marketing shows anything it's that being the first to market does not ensure market dominance, just a couple of months of no compitition.

We are recruiting.

I was personally going to buy AoC anyway, and enjoy the hell out of it.

WAR is consistently disappointing me these days. The quality of gameplay in their videos is.. shall we say utterly disappointing. Now we hear they are allowing pre-orders into beta and delaying to the fall? If that didn't = 'sell as many boxes as fast as you can' to me, I don't know what else does.

On another note WAR's release dates never include a reasonably firm date, just a 'financial quarter' or in this case 'fall 08.' IMHO that doesn't bode all that well either and I really wouldn't be surprised if the game was pushed back again if we get to say, september and still don't have a solid launch date.

To be frank, AoC appears to be on a whole other level then WAR lately, and the hype of both games shows it.

It is all vaporware until I see it go live!

No effect on my decision, I was going to play them both. In fact, it solves a conflict I had...didn't really want to start AOC and then have to switch to WAR a few months later.  Now I expect I'll have 5-6 months to really put into AOC before WAR comes out (Nov at the soonest I predict)  which more than enough time for me to max level at least one character so I can check out the endgame.

Are you trying to imply that either one of these games doesn't have open zones?  Because Uh, they both do.. so I don't really understand what you're trying to say..

I was planning on buying both though I'm really only moderately curious about AoC.

What I do like seeing is more MMORPGs out there to give some competition to WoW.   The MMORPG genre has traditionally been one major game at any one time, I'd like to see it reach the point where there are several choices of major games for players.

As others have said AoC and WAR are sufficiently different games that one can buy both and decide which one fits you best.   I really enjoyed REH's books and I'd like to see what Funcom does with them, but for a video game I think I'll find the more over-the-top setting of Warhammer more interesting.
