1. Thou shalt sell your software for 50 dollars with a 15 dollar a month subscription 2. Thou shalt design an MMO with expansive content 3. Thou shalt design an MMO that supports no less than 7 million players 4. Thou shalt realize that it takes piles of servers to being developement on an MMO 5. Thou shalt have no less than a 500000000 megabit internet connection 6. Thou shalt be in the same market as WoW and other big name MMOs 7. Thou shalt hire tons of programmers, artists, and designers 8. Thou shalt put no other MMO before WoW 9. Thou shalt cater power levelers 10. Thou shalt and at least 10 bazillion million hours of content before release
These are just some exagerations of people exeragerating MMO developement. I see a lot of ill or noninformed people making these type of statements all of the time. I'm not saying MMO developement is easy or inexpensive I just saying MMO developement does have to be as hard or expensive as people make out.

Originally posted by Jixx I see your point here, but I disagree with it not being inexpensive. You can make a complete good product without spending a single dime. Ofcourse it would take longer maybe, but you can work a lone.
What you need is the right tools, the right experience, and motivation. Not just decide "OH HEY LETS MAKE AND MMO" because you wont get anywhere. Start off by learning a language (I recommend Python) then learn a few more, saaay a bit of C++ and maybe Ruby... Then learn to use stuff like Blender etc..
Takes VERY long, but if you choose to make one without spending anything... its possible... |

Yeah, people seem to forget that you can use Python; most of EvE was written in Python. I haven't used Ruby ever yet but I will sooner or later. I'm not sure if Blender is the best first taste of 3d though... at first glance at the interface, it looks as if it was built by aliens who use hieroglyphics... (no offense to anyone)(it does grow on you after awhile though) It's also really hard to use on a laptop because some of the hotkeys are on the number pad but there's no number pad on a laptop and the numbers above "!@#$%^&*()" are already used by other hotkeys... and the hotkeys are mandatory because not everything is on the top menu or the dashboard at the bottom... Overall, Blender works great ...just so long as the user doesn't die from a heart attack when they first see it... (which probably happens quite often...) |
