Lately I have seen some people mention in threads that they have quit as they didn't like the dynamic PvP zones in PotBS.  This is understandable on one hand but you can really avoid PvP even when the territories move.  Some tips:

* Obviously the best solution is don't enter PvP zones if you can help it but I know a lot of grief arises because people may have no choice or have logged back on to find that they are in the zone.   So this point is for new players.

Step 1

* When you undock from any port you have 60 seconds invunerability as long as you don't do anything.  I mean nothing.  Don't even move!  When you exit a hostile port have a good look around to see if there are any players around that may want to attack.

Step 2

* If there are no players (and you should have checked best sailing course prior to leaving port)  then head (with the wind if possible) to nearest safety zone.   To help with this just click on the compass for the best direction.  It can become dissorientating when you undock so if you know the best route is say NE just click on the NE part of the compass and it will adjust automatically.

Step 3

* If you see players that will want to engage in combat then you have 2 options.  (taking into account you don't want to fight).

1st option:  If the enemy is far enough you can try turning as fast as possible and redock.  Remember you need to be within 7 miles or less and the port undocks you at 8-9 miles.  1 mile doesn't sound like much but when you have to turn it can take a bit of time.  So make sure they don't have a chance to catch you.

2nd option: Go on the offensive and escape the PvPers.  If you see an NPC sailing within distance or just our of reach you should move and attack them asap.  Now if you are in the area you should be high enough level to deal with the combat but even if you are not you can always out run the NPC and you have for the time being evaded the PvPers.  Try and attack an NPC that is not from the same nation as the player as well.

What happens if I get attacked anyway?

1st: Shoot a flare as soon as you enter combat

2nd: Use the nation channel!! I know the level 50's in my society actively patrol pirate zones to A) attack pirates and B) protect / assist lower level players who are trying to get out of the zone or already in combat.  On a daily basis they and other players are entering combat and helping people who are getting hit by players and if they are late they will actively hunt down the attacker after the combat.  So if you are engaged announce in the Nation channel your location and situation.  E.g.  I am a level 20 Officer and have been attacked near.....can anyone help!?  Chances are you may not get help but if there are a couple of level 50's from the same nation at the port or sailing by you may find yourself collecting loot rather than giving it.

I hope this has helped with the PvP issue.  If anyone else has any tips please add.

Take care out on the oceans!

p.s. All ya pirates can bite me!

I do know, also, a very good way to avoid the ackward PvE (including the wonderfull Avatar), the lack of freedom and exploration, the very low player base, the total instancing, the crashing economy, the non-sense crafting and the lack of historical accuracy, the general boredom and routine on combat (PvE and PvP)...

Does this game have elves, hobbits, and orcs too?

P.S. like the Pooh Bear!

Those who do not know their history, are bound to step in it.

A few additions, Cryses:

- most ports spawn you inside the 7 mile limit, so you can immediately get back in if you see player enemies. Some ports are bugged that way (and yes, it is a bug), report those.

- if you attack an NPC of the same nation as the enemy players you see, THEY CAN JOIN YOUR INSTANCE. They have a small time window to do so (30 seconds or 1 minute, never timed it).

- flares do not work in pvp zones, apart from giving a colorful effect. Once the circle closes, you cannot let helpers in

- in PVP zones, everyone of your nation can join your instance as long as the circle is green. They do not need to be grouped with you.

Just wait until SOE ruins *your* game...

When you have to go to such extreme lengths just to avoid getting ganked is it really worth playing the game?

Point is, it's not going to extreme lengths, it's just using common sense. Like when playing on a full pvp server, only easier, because there are many many safe zones. All you really need to do is check your world map before leaving any port or going anywhere. PVP is entirely avoidable (and my husband is a PVE only player, so trust me, he'd be gone in a heartbeat if it wasn't).

A better way is to skip the "whole experience".

At least until they revamp the the aspects of the game that everyone (most everyone) hate and there are plenty of threads on that. Or, until it goes F2P. THis is not the worst game I have ever played, but not counting the NGE, it is the worst one to pay $15/mo for.

The Devs came out to say that gank groups are what they wanted, and people have to deal with it. That's fine, and it is a reason many people have walked. I played for free for 2 weeks on someone's acct that quit for this very reason.

Not a terrible game, but not worth the $50 +15/mo.

Trying to avoid this thread turning into a hate vs love argument on PotBS.  However I am finding it surprisingly addictive and its probably down to the fact I like tactical games and its an MMO that requires a fair bit of tactics on the players half.   I can see its faults but nothing that will stop me playing anytime soon.

Regards to taking action to avoid PvP its not that hard. Like another post said its common sense but I have seen a lot of threads from people complaining how they get ganked all the time so I wanted to post a help thread on the matter.
