McCain for President

I often advocate for high death penalities.  However, time can be one hell of a deterant to die, especially when you don't have as much time to play the game as you'd like.  I still lean more on the side of strict DP, but if done properly, time can be an acceptable DP for me.  It will never be the way it use to be in 1997 Ultima Online.  But that's probably for the best due to all the grief players that exist.

This is a bit off the death penalty topic, but I remember reading that there is a diminishing returns to renown points from killing a player again too soon.  Not sure how close the resurrection points will be but if too close it could prevent some sort of camping to take place.

Time indeed will be a great penalty, yet it has to be carefully calculated.  If the distance placed away after fighting is too far or takes to long to get back to, then I can see alot of players who perhaps die rapidly or many times simply not bothering returning if its too much of a hassle.

The best would be not dying at all, just make the players immortal, that way we won't lose any time.

Hey this is the future! yay!

If the OP wants a MMORPG with a harsh death penalty, then they just need to raise $20-30 million, make their game and get the same number of subscribers from MMORPGs in the decade before WoW when most gamers were avoiding MMORPGs like the plague.   And then they can watch their investment go down the tubes.

MMORPGs are evolving.    They finally know they can reach the mainstream gamer market and now MMORPGs are going to cost even more to make because gamers are no longer willing to pay to beta-test bug-filled, half-finished products like in the old days.

That means MMORPGs can no longer target a niche market to be profitable.   And ill-conceived, timesink mechanics that so many hardcores regard as good game design, like harsh death penalties, are going the way of the dinosaurs.

And good riddance.

This is not MMO evolution it`s only more Whiners who looks like school girls in whores outfit who get prude when things go dirty . You already have LOTRO and WoW if you can`t make a choice just flip a coin...and because of whiners games got watered down and those whiners don`t stay long, when the next game is announced they jump there and start whining again

Has successfully forgiven SOE/LA for the NGE.

I agree with Alienovrlord, niche markets don't survive too well in this modern market. Look what happened to Fury, a PvP-only game. They officially closed down after what, one month? Personally I'm a roleplayer, but can you imagine what would happen if they made a RP-centric game where you had to make all the content yourself? Yeh, that's right, it would close down after one month as well.

However, I think it's a pity that niche games don't have much of a chance. There should be games to cater to all tastes. hardcore PvP folks, hardcore RP, casual, whatever you like.

Niche game can survive if they are well done and released with few bugs.EvE Online is a niche game which doing well and I believe that the game will be there for a very long time.Vanguard could have been great if Sigil didn't ruin it all.I do hope that AoC too will be a niche game that will survive.

I would hardly consider EVE a niche game now considering it has passed 200k subscribers, and continues to grow. Source.

It has survived WoW and the WoW wanna be(s)without seeing its population decline dramatically and now its subs recently topped the 200k I would call it a successful niche game which is getting a well deserved renown

And a big cheer for it , nice to see another MMO doing well without having a fantasy setting. I still wouldn't call it a niche game though. If we take WoW out, it is now probably one of the biggest subbed games in EU/US, and considering where it was 3 years ago it's a big achievement. Most MMOs lose subs as time passes, EVE has slowly grown. They are only the second developer (that I know of) that are proud of the subs they achieved and are not afraid to publish them. I'm still loving it so hope more people get the chance to play it :)

I use to be a big death penalty guy myself but not anymore.  Its an old game mechanic and I dont think you will see many games with it anymore.  It causes a lot of people to not play at all and really drags down server populations.  On top of that it scares to many people away from pvp so you dont get to pvp that often.  I played L2 and enjoyed it at first but when everyone just used BSOEs and pvp pretty much died it killed all the fun of the game because everyone was to worried about the pvp lose.
