I''m never pleased; games can always be designed better.

Here's my thing. I'm really sick to death of goblins, orcs, dwarves and the medieval look and lore of the whole western fantasy genre. To the point where I will walk out of a movie or return a DVD to the shop because of it. It sucks, it's dull as dishwater, adn that's my ongoing, honest opinion.

However, people have been saying some pretty good things about LOTRO and I could be tempted have a go at it. Demos and quick trials aren't my thing: I do not dedicate time to a game. I'm definately a casual gamer these days.

Is LOTRO going to be something that I should invest my time in? Existing players: Your feedback on the game would be appreciated.

It is the game based on Tolkien's work, and Tolkien's work was a grandfather of fnatasy genre so there is no escaping elves etc. That being said it is a well done game with decent graphics and a concept a lot of people find enjoyable.

The story line is great (based on the lore Tolkien developed in detail) and majority of quests are fun.

It is also casual friendly (you can easily solo if you prefer it to grouping), has instances and raid content, plus a sideshow of PvP.

However, as the other threads here show, it is NOT a PvP game nor does it try to parade as one.

Hope that helps.

Stand up for what you believe; Even if you stand alone.

Hmm if you really don't want generic fantasy stuff, you COULD give Tabula Rasa a try.  I hear it's gotten a lot better since launch and it's a fairly casual game - but I haven't played it since the beta.  Give it a look:

Well I definately think you should atleast try it. But I believe MMORPG fans should try all MMO's on offer, especially before they judge them. Most of them have something great and unique to offer, and they all have their up's and downs. It's all on personal opinion. Im not a big fan of Lotr but it really does have some cool features. It's a very clean/bug-free games and it looks great graphics wise. I can definately see why it appeals to so many people. Hope this helps and if you try out the game, I hope you enjoy it.  Post in the same thread if you try it out and let us know what you think. :)

I'd say absolutly yes, the game is great (good lore, great graphics). It was not my game, but it is worth a try.

From your first paragraph, I don't think you will enjoy LoTRo.  There are lots of goblins, orcs, dwarves, and the medieval look and lore in the game.  So... that seems to be at odds with what you've said you like and dislike.

There is a free trial you can download to try out the game... however, that goes against what you've said about trials not being your thing.  So, I'm not sure where that leaves you.

I like LoTRo and find it to be the best MMO available right now; however, that is me.  I like all the things that you've said you dislike in your first paragraph, so obviously your mileage may vary.

Considering your quote in your sidebar... I'm thinking that maybe Pirates of the Burning Sea might be a good fit for you.  Possibly Anarchy Online might work as well; because even though it's Sci-Fi it doesn't have the heavy emphasis on space like SWG and EvE.   Well, whatever your choice; good luck.

Cowards die many times before they truly perish, yet the valiant only taste death but once.

Lotro is the kinda game that you say to yourself , dang wth am i playing this one second , yet as soon as you log out you want to play more. My tactic is to make friends i am successor
in a kinship with decent size so i do well. When you have lots of poeple to group with makes things much esier. I would give it a shot.

Currently Playing:
Lord of the rings online

Have played:
Vanguard~saga of heroes
EVE online
City of Heroes

Hard to answer this question. I played since beta but just cancelled my account. I really enjoyed it for a few months. However soon like many I started to get bored. I really logged in just to run around since game looks great and I love Tolkien. For a few month I kept my subscription with hope the frequent updates would relite the fire I had for the game at first. Sadly that never happened. I do think if you can afford the game go for it. Many still love the game. I have seen a obvious player decline in my guild and on my server in general since the game went live. I recommend giving it a try and you may love it but the lack of sandbox feel eventually made the game feel flat to me.

The only things that are special about LoTRO are the graphics and the Lore.  Otherwise, it's pretty much a generic, cookie cutter MMO like all the others.

If the Lore makes you sick to the stomach, I can't imagine why you'd want to play it.
