because the game is a bowser game and you don't have to download it.

Kid's are afraid to download games off the internet.

I highly doubt that those 5 million are -paying- subscriptions.  The game is free with the option of subscribing for more content.  On top of that, it is only $5 a month, so that might have something to do with it.

It would be very difficult for a larger budget game to get by on $5 a month for subscriptions these days.

Runescape doesn't have bad game mechanics, a interesting recruitment method(basically runescape will be around longer than WoW), and well above average quests.   that's about all the good you can say about it.

oh wow.  2 million might not be a lie after all.

if you total up the number of members playing right now there are 107,000.  even if you do conservative guestimation that only a tenth of the player base is on right now that puts you with a million subs.   that also means that the community isn't nearly as cheap as you'd imagine for a F2P since a little under half of the playing people right now are subscribing.

Well if you really must know, Runescape has been around for a lot longer than ffxi and wow, and for most of us it was our first experience with MMORPG.

if you quit runescape you can go back and you don't have to download anything

you don't have to wait hours to find a party, you can do pretty much whatever you want whenever you want to

runescape isn't a bad game

the graphics aren't sub-par anymore, they're pretty decent for a browser based java game..

if you're bored and have nothing to do you can go online and boom theres runescape- sign in and waste your time

PKing used to be the reason a lot of people played, pking got me out of shoplifting because it gave me the same high and i wasnt going to get arrested for doing so(little fun fact about me)

ALSO adding to this runescape costs 1/3 of most subscription based mmo's if you want to go that route and if you give up the subscription you can still play for free..

there aren't 15 expansions.. @ 20-50 dollars each
Jagex might not be much better than $OE but they don't try to market unfinished expansions, they constantly release new content for no more than the usual subscription rate
They put a lot of fun minigames into runescape, they are fun, too bad none of them are freetoplay
I'm not a PR, i think jagex has the same problems a lot of companies have, they silence you on the forums if you say something bad about how they do things, they don't listen to their customers, they don't hire professional GM's
pretty much their GM's are a bunch of whiny tattletales they handpick to enforce their rules for them

The most naive thing that I've ever heard is that we're alone in the universe.

it's not a bad game, it's a bad 'general' community.

Britney Spears sold 50+ mil CDs, why? Because someone liked her music.

As mentioned, you can play in your browser. So my guess fall on the schoolchildrens sitting alt+tabing around the world.

And off course more serious players.

runescape has the best marketing ever.   here have this for free, once you get bored with you extremely invested character you ARE going to pay so you can do the 'fun' stuff we have over here.

A couple reasons I'm throwing out there.

- It's a browser game, so you wouldn't get a virus/etc. as easily as a downloaded game.

- It's decent

- It has an active forum

- It's mainly free. Yes, you can pay for membership, but that's for more stuff. Sort of benefits. If you don't pay you still get a lot.

- It has several things to do.

- Graphics don't suck, but they're not incredible either.

- Several other reasons as well.

Where there's a game, there's a player, I'm that player.

The website looks like doo doo for a game that has 2 million subscribers.

Did you?  Both the headline and the first line stated 5 million subscribtions. The fact that the last line said 2 million doesn't reduce the confusion.
