The enemy is so dumb! They believe that WE are the enemy! - A famous orc commander. |
This is my main "concern" with the game atm (beside my fear of a raiding shaft-them-all system, but endless skills make such a poor ending unlikely).
I LOOOOOOVE to play with casuals, but I also LOOOOVE to have a game designed to appeal to me. Atm, when I read their basic design decisions, the game look awesome and great, for me, a hardcore player.
Now, I could just go and support them and cheer them and praise them endlessly, brown nosing them into-self complencacy. But, I have a concern here. Is this game going to appeal to casuals? I really loooove to play with casuals. They make me feel more hardcore and I help them and well, we usually have a good time. I can see myself going for the "unlimited" aspects of the game, and I think it can be arranged to please casuals.
But, if it is unchecked, I am afraid the casuals might be left on the side and then choose to play something else. There is no need to hunt down what I like...the endless skills is definitely nice and a +. Yet, at the same moment, why would a casual play the game?
I have a few suggestions here, some might work better than other. Each of these suggestion try to make it nice for both, the hardcores and the casuals:
- Maybe have skills caps on some zones/area. This give a goal for the player, in the short term, he wanna be the best there. You hardly affect the game as a whole, as it is still unlimited everywhere else, but in that zone, the casuals have a precise goal, and they can rule it.
- Maybe have some titles/unique thing unlock at precise levels. The unique things could be new races, new customisations, new anything...
- Sidekick? Casuals sure like to group with a high level and see crazy stuff.
Anyway, these are merely ideas. But, well, I may be unsure exactly on how to appeal to both, casuals and hardcores...post your ideas and try not to destroy everything for either side (xp curve made soo easy = what would a hardcore does, I have nothing against the smoothing of XP progression, but again, I hope there is still something to earn...in endless skills...I guess eventually the XP progression would be insanely requiring...but that is just a guess). |

Originally posted by Anofalye I am a casual player myself, I play when I get the chance, but I am not a hardcore player. Now this game appeals to me highly, and I cannot wait until th beta comes out. But if anything, I think that this game would actually attract more casuals. It is not the average grind, so I will hopefully not be that far behind in level than the hardcore players. Also, we can find hardcore players, like yourself, to help us when we need it :) By the way, each player has its different quest, so it will not be like you are farther in my original quest, because you cannot do my original quest :). I do like to team up with higher levels and see new stuff though lol :) |

Any and every game, especially MMORPGS can either be casual or hardcore, and in many cases both at the same time. It all depends on your play style. You could play Hello Kitty Online 4 hours a day Mon-Fri and 8 hours Saturday and Sunday and you know what? You'd be playing Hello Kitty Online as a Hardcore game. So you see, a game is not hardcore or casual, only PLAYERS are hardcore or casual. You just have to find a game that fits your personal playstyle. Sandbox vs. Linear or FFA vs Consensual PvP blah blah blah these features don't make a game hardcore or casual, they are simply features. One set of features may appeal more or less to the "hardcore" or "casual" player, but it still doesn't matter. It's all about how you choose to play. |

Originally posted by heerobya I think the OP is trying to ask is that if this game will also appeal to players who do not play as much, seeing as they may fall behins..Not positive though |

You express my concern better than me. :)
Will the casuals have enought goals and purposes? In Saga of Ryzom...my casuals friends just turn away after 1 sitting or 2, they didn't feel like they have a goal or a purpose. (not comparing this game to Ryzom btw) |

Originally posted by Anofalye I am a casual player, and I find a large reason to play - Everything you do has a consequence Many quests to do And your own personal story And I hope to join a guild early on. Although I do not play a lot, these things would appeal to both casual and hardcore I think |

A few things about this: Your personal story goes along at whatever pace you set, casual or hardcore. Higher level players can group with lower level characters and help them along. Since the game builds quests on the fly for the group, it can help to balance the quest for that set of players. In addition, there is a combat system addition that helps when higher level creatures attack lower level players (or the other way around) so that there is some 'reaction' time allowing the lower level to have a chance. Maybe not to win, but to at least do something about gettnig out of the conflist before they are killed instantly. As far as custom classes and such, we offer a University system that allows players who want help in creating their character class. If you aren't interested in the work of making a custom class, you can join a University Cadre and they will give you a plan that creates the type of character you want. There are about 30 Cadres to choose from, though newbies will only have less making it simpler (they gain access to more complex versions later). I'm not sure if this answers all of your questions, but we have put thought into this issue. |
