To be honest, i hope all the players except for the mature ( in behaviour ) audience stay in WoW, don't get me wrong i had one hell of a time the first year in WoW, the thing that scared me away, was the awful community, and the game being all about gear , not skill...

i mean wtf...

me having ( at that time ) spent half a year to get full shadowcraft, best stuffs and was back then considered one of the best rogues of that server, having my ass handed to me by an alliance night elf rogue, with no skill, but molten core gear...

seems quite a bit unfair...

And speaking community wise, i have one thing to say...

"Give me money, or i will spam you with LEEROOOOY JENNKIIIINNNNSS!!!!"

I have played DAoC for like 3 years, FFXI for almost 3 years, and stuff like tabula rasa( half a year ), auto assault (4 months, till the game died ), CoX ( 1 year)

and up to so far, i loved the DAOC and FFXI community, the CoX community was nice as well, so if  WAR gets some people from that community, this'll probably be another MMO me luv long time!

( Sorry for the bad explanation of things, english isn't my first language, so i'm just trying to make my point here )

The problem with WAR is the PvP grind. you sack the enemy city, it reset and repeats.. woop'd do. WAR just offers PvP grind where as WoW offers PvE and PvP grind.

So will there be an exoduse? no... just as with VG, Lotro, TR and all the other MMO's released that were said to kill WoW or steal millions of there players.. it wont happen.

Sure WAR being a 90% copy of WoW (please no crap about WH being 15 years old than WC blah blah) will help its numbers but it will still play 2nd fiddle to to WoW... Those who do leave WoW for WAR will return after the free month or when Wotlk is released.

So how many of you are in beta and have been a good while and know that WAR's gameplay mechanics  and it's PvP is good ? Some of you are stating this like fact that since you like the Warhammer IP you know this game will be great -

Being a big fan of the IP means nothing in equation to WAR being a fun mmorpg , its gameplay could suck , it could be slow and boring , who knows ,

Lots can change between now and release , it could get much better and it could get much worse with bad decisions also -

But just being based on a popular IP doesn't mean it cannot turn out horrible -

Alot of unrest in the pvp crowd.

I completely agree and couldnt of said it better myself.

Personally Im one of the pvp crowd that just isnt/wasnt sattisfied with what was available. Dont get me wrong, I love WoW and have a alot of fun in the battlegrounds and in the arena matches but I still miss the RvR of DAOC. It seems to me that WARHAMMER is taking from a bit of DAOC and some from WoW. Personally I dont think there could be a better combination. Some might take that as a bad thing, but Im saying that as a compliment.

As far as the pve or pve/pvp guilds I know many personally that will stay with WoW for the sheer fact of how much time they have already put into this game and building a solid guild. It takes time to get good gear, to get a "great" guild and many arent willing to let that go for something better regardless if there is something better on the horizon.

I will be giving WAR at least a 3 month subscription to give it the shadow of the doubt.  No games are perfect at the start so I think 3 months is plenty of time to get most of the main launch bugs out.  I just hope other people are willing to stick to it that long, because most people I know play it for 2 weeks then go back to WoW because they "think" its better because it don't have those bugs.

My answer is no simply because you won't see WAR before September.

I think so. Hello Kitty Online is taking over the world last time I heard.

Warhammer does not appeal to every gamer.  This is due to many factors including system specs, player vs. player and realm vs. realm focus, and the Warhammer IP to name a few.  Although the game seems amazing to some, the sheer staying power of Warcraft will not falter due to new releases.  Warcraft has far too many attributes that appeal to a vast crowd of players.  The low system requirements, player vs. player elements, and consistant player vs. environment updates will keep a large amount of players hooked.

If you ever played EverQuest, you would have noticed a similar trend prior to Warcraft's launch.  Many games that focused on a niche crowd pulled some players away, but a vast majority either resubscribed or stayed with EverQuest.  I see a similar trend with World of Warcraft.  Good games will launch, many players will switch, but World of Warcraft will remain strong regardless.

That is until a game comes out that has the same kind of appeal as World of Warcraft.  That will take time, though.  Many will launch before any real competition arises.

Personally, unlike World of Warcraft, EverQuest's appeal began to slip after the third expansion.  MMORPG's, unlike other genres, must rely on one game to withstand years of replay value.  This becomes a ticking clock for all games in the genre.  A new and better game always looms on the horizon, and for EverQuest at least, this became the thorn that eventually brought down the beast.  Although this might seem like a curse, I favor it.  The fear of a new game stealing the crowd forces game makers to work hard on continuing their appeal.  Failure, therefore, scares developers into developing.

Also, I have already pre-ordered WAR.  World of Warcraft sucks (in my humble opinion) when it comes to a solid player vs. player and realm vs. realm play style.  Although WoW has given players a good incentive to play their PvP game, they have not developed its functionality to a point that I accept.

Warcraft's lack of a solid PvP focus came about due to the lack of PvP development in the beginning.  Unlike Warhammer, Warcraft did not plan on an in-depth PvP system in the beginning.  This has only become an issue for me due to the lack of differentiating between PvP and PvE.  Parts of the game are nerfed and buffed solely due to PvP, which was not the game's original intention.  This leaves much to be desires from a solely PvE oriented player.  Even though I do enjoy PvP, Warcraft's vision of battlegrounds, world PvP, and arena falls short of the amazing experience it could have been.

Warhammer, in this respect, appeals to me because it has the vision and focus PvP deserves.  I will play the beta if I'm accepted, and play the retail until I know if it is worth abandoning a game I've really enjoyed for years.  Hopefully a large enough crowd migrates from other MMORPGs and the tabletop game to make the experience enjoyable.

Nope.   Not enough people will leave to call it an "exodus" at least.  Think about it.  WoW has how many subs now? Ten Million?  Minus the farmers, and MMO-Veterans and how many will you have now? Still  millions.  I'm not convinced that these millions will be open to dropping what they've worked years for to move on when WoW may very well be the first MMO they've played or even heard of.   I also think that the people on this site and others who post about "Leaving WoW", "WoW-Killers", or "Apocalypse WoW", are the vocal minority.  Stop thinking that the millions of people Blizzard has coaxed out of their holes (or into theirs) represent the whole of the MMO market.  I think they care more for the game, not the genre.  Prove me wrong though, AoC.

The hardcore PvPers will be gone. Hardcore PvErs are pretty much gone too. They are just waiting for a new game to come out.

Well that depends on how hardcore the hardcore player is. In WoW they can claim to be say a hardcore PvPer, yet won't stray from WoW because they feel its PvP is the best, they have a reputation they don't want to have to rebuild in another game, etc. Same goes for the PvErs.

What could cause a slight defection from WoW would be a game that offers something for everyone, a little more in depth than WoW and offers the same level of value per playtime. Other than that, Games like WAR/AoC will see a good playerbase, while not putting too much of a dent in WoW, due to the fact there are many potential customers from other MMOs and the pool of players who skipped WoW. Games like DAoC, EQ2, VG, etc are the games that will see more of an effect from AoC/WAR's release. Not because of thier PvP or PvE, but because they are not WoW.

The only time I see WoW having a substantial decline in subs is after they release thier 3rd expansion pack. By then even the major hold outs will start to get annoyed with paying $40+ for more of the same old same old.

People who have the cash and are bored almost always check out some new game(s).  For at least 30 days..

Others have pretty much said it.

WAR isn't going to make a dent in WoW.  It might help put a dent in WoW with all the other games around.

translation: if WAR was the only new game around then NO not at all. (in a meaningful money losing way that blizzard would even notice).

Personally I think WAR is in a position that WoW never had to be in.. and posts like this really put even more pressure on that game.

It would get to wordy for anyone to want to read.  If you've paid much attention to everything EA is doing... and then looked at Blizzard and WoW (previous to its launch) it should be obvious the amount of pressure EA's games will be under to perform well.

WoW was also never in the situation of more or less replacing an existing game and hoping to appeal to its audience as well as to people who had quit or never tried it.

(yes that is a reference to DAoC and if you look at the world wide populations and EA's history of shutting down low population games... then one wonders what happens to daoc after WAR releases.. or if WAR doesn't do that well what the reaction will be from EA).

Lets just let the game come out and hope it does well (if you're a game player you should want them all to succeed.. other wise the market gets like.. well like it is right now).

I noticed many folks I knew on the server I was on stopped logging in when LotRO came out.

I don't really care about whether the other players are kids or not as long as they know their class - one of the best tanks I have ever raided with was a 13 year old.  He was a freaking god when it came to prot warrior and his gear wasn't all that great.

My real problem with the community in this game will be folks that are just in it for themselves and don't play the game like it's RvR.  Putting crap up on AH for 1500 gold is a nice example of what I mean.   Or buying an item in AH and reintroducing it to AH at a higher price.  Or they raid to the boss that drops the item they need then they drop out of group.  Or the guilds that doesn't help anyone but themselves - you can raid with them but you can't have any of the loot - like they are doing you a favor by letting you tag along.  These aren't kids doing stuff like this - it's probably a lot of you reading this and complain about the kids!  In RvR it should be all for one one for all - i'd think, but I doubt thats going to be the path that players take.

Why So Serious?

3/03/08 10:07:58 AM#37

Luckily WAR's loot & renown system nullfies alot of those loot concerns.   Everyone gets compensated somehow.   There's always greedy people though in every MMO.   I can't stand greedy people, they always end up on my 'don't help, group, or guild' with list.    Sometimes their entire guild ends up on my list.

So far from the sounds of things including the Renown system now that its been explained its looking like I can finally play a game and make friends but not have to depend on a guild to hold my hand or force me to do things.  I can fight for my realm, help my realm, help who ever I want and get credit for it.  Obviously I'm not going to jump in a fight where they're easily taking on the enemy some will see that as 'kill stealing' but if someone's struggling or a keep is under siege I'm there.   Not everyone will play that way some will be guild only or me me me but atleast for once I know I dont have to play with those arses in order to progress in the game.

Wow was fun when it first came out.  It was fresh, exciting, and the pvp wasn't that bad!  In regards to the environments, I thought the night elf starting area was awesome, the music was epic, and the PVP was truly gut wrenching.I had a great time pvping all the way up through my levels and I specifically remember forming raids in my 20's to take out horde in The Barrens (and every zone was unique and polished). This was before the guard zerg, so that you actually felt like you were overtaking territory..  All over global chat, you constantly heard cries from other players that the horde were attacking.  One of my first experiences as a rogue was being completely demolished when I first stepped foot  in the pvp area Teldrassil by several level 40's on mounts.  I

So, when  several horde ran through me that day in Teldrassil, I knew I would have my revenge.  I wrote down the name of the guild, leveled up, and 2 months later our guilds were fighting mad in the level 60 areas.  With our numbers, they had no chance.

I spent a year and a half occupied and completely addicted to Wow.  It was the best time gaming I've had in my life.  Before Bg's and honor tokens, there was a realm pride that existed.  I was fighting for the alliance, and writing about it on the forums :)  I hope War can catch this feeling that Wow had (and lost over time).  ESsentially, after a year and a half of Wow, I couldn't take the honor and PVE grind so I quit.  I realize that all games will become stale eventually, but I Can't wait for the ride that War will take me on.  Hear's to the hope that another truly special game exists out there for me !

I think you're off by a factor of at least 10. You seriously think only one half of one percent of WoW's player base is leaving? One out of 200?

My estimate is at least 1 out of 20 will leave WoW for WAR within the first month of release, with many more playing both games.

No, it's not going to kill WoW, but you're going to see at least 500,000 people make the switch.

There was some exodus when LOTRO was released. Most of the players I talked to the first few weeks after release were ex-WoW players.

I work with a guy who ran a WoW guild, and they all moved to LOTRO. The question is will it make a difference? And like others have said, do you really want people spamming 'This game sucks, woW is better"?

I can't wait for WAR. If it is as good as I think it will be, I'll try to talk all my co-workers that play LOTRO or WOW to give it a shot.
