Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway. |
I'm wondering if anyone else is having insane lag times with the RoadRunner cable ISP. Every evening between 5 - 11 PM EST, my "turbo" 15mps connection slows down to a crawl. I've tried everything I can think of on my end, and I've called tech support 3 times. The last time, they suggested I just run without a firewall (which didn't help with the slow speed issue btw). I'm going nuts here, and they're the only high speed in town. ARGH!

Sounds like there are a lot of subscribers that are on the same node as you. And actually pretty much all ISP's tend to slow down a bit at that time ( or any time a lot of subscribers long on) unless the ISP has some serious hardware and has a solid back bone of bandwith on that particular hub you are on that will make the load less noticable to you. |

Boo...... |
15 mps? I currently have road runner and the fastest I've clocked is 4.3 mps. Is the "Turbo" thing another package they offer? Damn.......15 mps....that is fast. When mine slows to a crawl it is usually primetime in the US and the server I'm trying to get to is Asian. ~Hairysun~

run a tracert to mmorpg.com and note which hop is the delay. I had this issue back awhile and it was within their service area. Eventually after showing them the hop logs from the tracert the issue was resolved. gl
To run the tracert go to start, then run, then type in tracert and hit enter and the dos box will come up or search for something like neotrace or the like. |

Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his brother. |
Ring them up and ask them: 1. If there are any outages in the area, planned or otherwise effecting your Node / Grid. 2. Do you have a DOCSIS 2.0 Capable ready modem? 3. Ask them to check upstream and downstream levels. 4. Ask them how long your modem has been on (its still on if its in standby) 5. Ask them the percentage of "packets lost" on your node and if its good or bad over the last couple of weeks. 6. The transmit level of you modem should be in the 34db to 54db range. About 43db (decibles) is great. 7. Ask them to check the Node your on compared to your neighbours to make sure your on the right one. 8. Do you have an amplifier on the line? 9. Have you any Splitters on the line? trace where the cable comes into the home. If you can cut some out then try it out. 10. Go here test your speed: http://www.speedtest.net/ before and after any removing of Splitters. 11. If your on a 15mb connection its most likely that your ISP will take 9mb and up as acceptible. Check out scores from website above.
Hope this helps, im in the business :)

I find tracert www.bluesnews.com to be reliable for ping results here in the northeast. i ping normally like 20 to it. do you live in a metro area? congested housing? post the tracert results here and I and others will walk you through you next course of action. the hard part is actually getting someone to care about you and your problem at timewarner. |
