Why? Every MMO based on an IP has s*cked hard. In fact most (not all, there are a few good ones) PC games based on an IP s*cked hard. They are money grabs is all. |

Honestly, I'm not really feeling a Planet of The Apes MMO. I was never a huge fan the whole thing. Besides that, I wouldn't really want to play as a gorilla.

The Apes would be over powered. The Humans can't even talk, unless you are a timetraveling astronaut, or a mutant. This is one of the most one sided possibilities I could think of. |

I wouldn't play a MMO because it is Planet of the Apes, but I wouldn't avoid a MMO either because of the setting. I am mostly neutral toward the setting, maybe a little biaised in favor of it. But not much. The features of the MMOs would be most important. :) - "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. Originally posted by NeonShadow I was there at launch. I'm not going to turn this into a SWG issue. It wasn't all that. In fact it was a broken buggy mess missing many key features at launch and thats as far as I will go on the subject as it is off topic. |

I think you could potentially do an RPG, but I don't see an MMO working overly well. |

PoTA MMO would have the advantage, like Star Trek, Sliders, or any other game that had different timelines. You could in effect start as in the originals where Charlston Heston and the others were captured, lead a rebellion, etc. You could in effect get off of that planet, like the new PoTA with Mark Wahlberg and travel to a different planet only to realize that the same problem exists, but in a different era. It has lots of possiblities, you could even go back in eras where humans are not on top of the food chain in medieval times. I think part of the problem with a PoTA MMO is most gamers today only have seen the newest version, and sorta laugh/scoff at the original movies. I remember watching these as a child when they first came out and was in awe. Younger people might not know the history, nor care to learn it. Failing to care or apathy for the lore would seem to be the largest hurdle to me, at least at first. If it was a good game, then people would still come...but MMO's are notorious for shaky starts. I also realize that this would most likely be a themepark game, due to the fact that in my example, you are trying to escape..not build an empire like in a sandbox. It could be done, but it would require alot of faith. I am still waiting on a western themed MMO so we'll see what happens. Playing: BF3, Prototype and Skyrim |

I think it would do better as a MUD or LARP than as an MMO because, honestly, I don't have much faith in the MMO audience to be able to maturely handle the topic of racism, let alone address it artisticly or with any respecful level of humor. Gemma... terrible idea? I think not. I do not play MMORPGs because I can't find a Planet of the Apes one. When I was 3 my brother made a very realistic ape mask for me out of masking tape and hair trimmings. I have roleplayed an ape in a LARP for 5 years, written a novel called "A War of Apes," and King Kong is my favorite movie. We need to have astronauts, mutants and apes! It would be awesome! I joined this forum only to respond to this post!!!!! I was going to get married in a gorilla suit at an ashram in Toas devoted to the monkey god Hanuman. Tim Burton, who I otherwise love, RUINED the remake, the new franchise is AWESOME and I can't wait for the next one, and some annonymous film maker whose name is an anagram of mine is in the midst of re-editing an unauthorized feature using scenes from all five original movies and new music and calling it "Pirate of the Apes." I'm here to tell you that apes are the ultimate for some people. Here is a market share concept that dawned on me when I was young during superbowl season: Be the only channel NOT to run football related stuff on superbowl sunday and you get 100% of the market that goes to people like me who hate football. I'm not the only one... someone above you suggested doing it as a LARP... well, my "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" battlegame was talked about and enjoyed throughout Amtgard, back when Amtgard was about roleplaying and having fun.
Anyone who thinks this is a bad idea doesn't know beans.
Anyone who can direct me to a free, browser based persistant world MMORPG where I can be a big ape who crushes stuff with a club or chops people in half with a sword or guns people down while smoking cigars gets a prize!
Listen to me: If you think it gets hot hitting people with boffer swords in full plate mail all summer, try doing it in a gorilla suit! |

I call Dr. Zaius! Now that my name is secure, I wouldn't play an MMO based on any version of Planet of the Apes. It's a message heavy story, and wouldn't translate well at all. The book was great, the Roddy McDowell version was a step below that, and the Mark Walberg version was several steps below that. I don't want to see anything several steps below that, much less play it. Edit: And this thread should just be under General Discussion. I don't sense any development effort behind any of the posters on this thread. It's a plea to make this IP, not a discussion of something tangible. Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority. |
