Some players, like me, are interested in this kind of thing. But the game would have to be entirely designed to work around that feature.

The player should at least be able to escape from ganks or have ways to prevent himself for being attacked by a stronger opponent (good intel), etc...

Would be very difficult for the game designers to make it viable.

u have to be lvl 50+ in hard mode to unlock extreme

and there is perma death in extreme mode

That depends.

Will it work on a large success level?  No, never.  We lose stuff permanently in real life...most of us like to keep our game stuff.

Would it work on a very small scale level?  Sure, but only if there were powerful ways to avoid death AND options for people who didn't wanna lose stuff forever.

Probably not for a game trying to make a profit. It could add something for players that are bored with everything else but it should be optional not forced.

4 options: easy (double xp, level cap 30), normal, hard (less xp, more skill/stat points), and ultimate (less xp, even more skill/stat points, perma death).  Easy and normal are unlocked by default.  Hard is unlocked once you get a normal character to level 50.  Ultimate is unlocked when you get a hard character to level 50.  If you die in ultimate mode and your character isn't ressurrected within 3 minutes, your character is permanently dead.

I've seen a couple other games offer perma-death as an option, but no MMORPGs that are based around it.  Few people are willing to watch days and weeks of their playing time go up in smoke due to a bad decision or turn of fate.  Its the kind of thing that drives players from a game.  Also, newer players will quickly get frustrated if they have to keep regenerating characters while trying to learn the game.  Anyone who does reach a higher level is going to spend more time running away than actually fighting.

Not only would they have to design around this feature and do it well. I feel they would have to make it a server option. Creating a good game with this as a possible server option would be doable.

No I do not think it would work with the way MMORPGs are build right now. It is impossible in almost every to survive to end-game without dying. Infect iwould a MMORPG not be boring if you just don't die? I really do not know. I think it might work if you build the game around it and design a whole new concept for MMORPGs.

No, not to flame you, but you can not make it a core game feature (building your game around it) and make it optional.

why do humans build, because it isn''t there

Some systems would allow you to die just fine and come back as a different person,  however real full on death will be an utter failure(gone to the friends list, gone to the guild).

This would be an interesting option, if you work enough you could become the epic hive queen of doom or the sage of wisdom.   when you die you'll lose quite a bit but you don't have to lose every thing as you knew it, but you might have also built up enough whatever to get more.

Scale of Development: Hobbiest, Micro-Indy, Indy, BB, AAA.

Opinions are not trolling.

Off the top of my head:

Benefits to Permadeath:

  • No need for an endgame
  • Keeps specific players from dominating
  • More intense gameplay experience

Drawbacks to Permadeath:

  • Unaccepted by mainstream audiences (general rule)
  • Players can become less attached to characters that are disposable
  • High potential for griefing
  • Item-centric gameplay becomes difficult to implement
  • Linear advancement and content systems become difficult to implement

Requirements for Permadeath

  • Classes/Skills/Abilities must be carefully balanced
  • Power difference between strong and weak characters must be minimal
  • Preferably, game should not centre around combat
  • Preferably, death should not be frequent
  • Preferably, death should not be unavoidable
  • Preferably, combat should not always be to the death
