Star Wars MMO's Questioned By Unknown Blogger

I would be *very* surprised to see another Star Wars mmorpg released while SWG is still limping along. I can't imagine Lucas would want two games competing for the same audience, especially since SWG has such a bad name in the gaming community.

That being said, I would play any Star Wars mmorpg not made by SOE so this might be encouraging news.

i would mump on another sw mmo, not made by soe.. i really misss a sw mmo :-(

A new Star Wars MMO wouldn't compete with SWG for the same audience.  The only reason SWG still exists is the Star Wars name.  The poor reputation and horrible state the game is currently in prevents the current game from even attracting the audience that it did prior to the CUNGE revamps.

Regardless of intent, a new Star Wars MMO would be a replacement for SWG.  Even if the idea would be to run both side by side, SWG won't survive a new Star Wars MMO being released.  LEC already knows there are more than 50K people willing to pay a monthly fee for a Star Wars game, and by now I'd bet they know that SWG isn't capable of attracting more than the folks currently subscribed.

The only chance of attracting more than the handful of folks who currently subscribe to the abomination known as SWG is to release a new Star Wars based MMO.  We know SOE made a proposal to make a new Star Wars MMO and were rejected (according to a former SWG developer who was involved in building a proposal).  I doubt it was done unsolicited, which would mean LEC had been shopping around for a developer for a new Star Wars MMO.

Just playing devils advocate here....

Perhaps Lucas doesn't feel that SWG is worth the trouble of secluding the IP for anymore.  If they actually think this "new" game will get even half the number of subs stated in that blog....then yes...yes they WOULD make it.  Its not about self competition...its about making money.  They could just as easily believe that SOE failed, and that this new company can do better.  If I'm not mistaken...the contact between those two is nearly up anyway.  What was it.....2 year, 4 year renewal?  Could be just dropping one game for the other.

If true, let me say this:

I don't care if it IS PvE rollercoaster style.  Just to SPITE SOE I would play for at least one month and buy the box.  I truly hope this does come to pass, to offer me that chance.  :D

I don't like to speculate on rumors, but all I can say is it would be an awful waste of a popular IP to not have a blockbuster Star Wars MMO.

Ultimately it's inevitable there will be another, it's just a question of when IMO.

The only way to have a blockbuster Star Wars MMO would be to go the EVE route with it...  Make it HUUUGE, make it hardcore, and make it immersive.

EVE now has almost as many subs as SWG did at it's peak, yet it's just as old.

It's by far the most hardcore MMO in existance.

I agree. The SW IP is just far to popular to be left sitting idle. It really is only a matter of when.

Will it succeed beyond the best SWG did (Pre-CU)?

Not likely.  Any future MMO will, fairly or unfairly, bear the baggage of the CUNGE.  They will always be compared to the Pre-CU and found to be lacking.

I'd put 150K subs as the most realistic cieling of intrest for a Star Wars MMO today.

I don't care how many people are playing it; if it's a quality SW game, I'll play it. It's that simple. It could have 5 million players, but it won't make the game better. Hell, as dumbed-down as it is, it won't even run on my PC anymore. The current code runs like a schizophrenic off his medication. Pre-NGE ran just fine, but NGE makes me glad I'm not epileptic with the whopping 12FPS I get.

I'd wager that there's at least 75k pre-NGE veterans that would give it a shot. More if it was designed similarly to the original game.
