Check this out. With Marvel Universe Online officially axed they may have taken STO on as their new project. With them hiring PE game developers as little as a month ago this bodes well for the future of STO. The rumors about MUO getting canceled have been floating around for at least the last 2 months so Cryptic must have known this was coming for at least that long. Only time will tell but this is definately good news for STO fans.

Maybe, but maybe not. I thought the Marvel MMO had been axed sometime ago, with hearing bad news I think for about a year. So now it is officially dropped. Well if it is Cryptic, I think they'll remain silent on it (or whatever project it is) and do what Bioware is doing, just going into stealth mode. I believe that line of, only one subscription based MMO has been commercially successful is BS. That implies conventional game development can no longer be used for subscription based MMO's. It is correct that only one subscription based MMO has gone multi-millions in users, but what about the others? To say that Eve-online is not a commercially successful MMO, |

| And that is why... Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness. |

Originally posted by Dracus That's exactly right. There is far more than one MMO game that is commercially sucessful. Heck, even UO is still alive and it's a decade old. It still may not have the numbers it used to, but it's obviously making them enough money to keep the servers open. The thing is, every one of these big companies want to beat WoW. Well, they can't. I'd even be willing to bet that the next MMO from Blizzard won't be able to beat WoW. WoW is in a sense a fluke. I'm not saying it's not a grreat game, but it was the first and only game to actually reach a mass market. Can it be done again? Sure, but not everyone can do it. There is a great market right now for niche MMO's. Eve is one of them. These companies should be happy with 100k to 500k subscribers. That's still an excellent amount of income to be made from smaller subscription based MMO's. I've been saying for awhile that alot of these large companies need to diversify like smaller publishers like StarDock. They all need to take a step back and really thik about the future of MMO's instead of continueing to pump out the garbage they have been. Just because spend 20 million on an MMO doesn't guarantee it's going to be a good MMO. |

You need to look at the statement made by Marvel and look at it from their perspective. "When we first entered into the development and agreement of the development of 'Marvel Universe Online,' we thought we would create another subscription-based MMO. And if you really look at the data there's basically one that's successful and everything else wouldn't meet our level or definition of commercial success. " Based on the work done by Cryptic, they felt it wasn't good enough to compete at the level they needed too in order to justify the investment they were making. In other words, they felt they wouldn't make enough money to satisfy their corporate goals. Looking at the ending of the Marvel/Cryptic deal and Marvels reasons for it, I'm not excited about STO going from PE to Cryptic. Marvel was obviously unimpressed with what Cryptic had done so far. We don't need STO to go from the bafoons at PE to another uninspired team. I played CoH/CoV for some length of time, and that is not what I want for STO. I'm not excited about the possiblity of Cryptic getting it for another reason, they hired staff from PE and I didn't like what they were doing. This is just my opinion. The rest of you feel free to get excited about the possibility of Cryptic taking over STO, (remember, most of Cryptic's dev team stayed with Coh/CoV working for NC Soft.

Cryptic could have had the makings for the best MMO in the history of forever and Microsoft might have still cancelled it. We don't know if it was the 'quality' of the game itself, Microsofts theories on how successful a super hero based MMO might be or any number of other reasons they canned it. The only think we can see for sure in that statement is that Microsoft wanted a game that would do much better than anything that isn't World of Warcraft.
City of Heroes is a well made game, but it just doesn't have much in terms of content. It is one of those games that is solid and very playable, but will only appeal to a small segment of players because of its game play. There is no reason to think they couldn't make a more complex game that is much broader in scope. For as shallow and repetitive as the game is, it is also one of the most successful games on the market and made by an indepentant studio to boot? Not to shabby.
Personally I think Microsoft missed the boat here.

I have played CoH/CoV for quite a while and i have to say that i am very satisfyed with Cryptic. The game is good and very fun.Its not perfect i know, it is repetitive and it lacks high-end content and complexity but it does what was suposed to. I mean, if u are a hardcore crafter this is not your game for sure, or if u are after some deep imersion and getting involved with a rich baseline story it might not be your game either. But if u after a game that is fun to lay, has good graphics or if u bored of fantasy based MMOs CoH/CoV may be a good option for u. My point is that i thnk that Cryptic is able to do a great job with STO and that is exactly what i am expecting from them. I really wish this game to be awesome. We deserve an amazing game dont we? :p |

Gameinformer is reporting the cyrptic is working on a new super hero mmo, so that might end speculation about them turning out STO, shrug, or it could be a smoke screen. http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200802/N08.0213.1711.09335.htm

...and I quote the late great Col. Sanders "I''m too drunk... to taste this chicken" |
I don't think the possible cancellation of a Marvel MMO really attributes them making STO. Yeah, they were apparently interviewing PE developers, but that could have just been for their own projects. Let's not forget about licensing, which PE (P2) may drag to the grave with them and sell along with their assets to whoever liquidates them. I really don't see Cryptic being interested in a franchise like Star Trek anyways. But, who knows... To reiterate a post I made before, don't expect an ST MMO for at least 5-6 years. So really, I don't think there would really be any good news as far as a new developer goes. |
