from me  reading this it seem that the community would rather have the game die than have  a server merge for thier own selfish reasons when players need others to do content with. Once again its the negative attitudes of the small minority of the community that flames and silences any type of real positive changes to the game.....

Server merges have historically never resulted in a game gaining subscribers.  Usually they level off the losses though.

There are very good reasons why SOE won't merge SWG servers:

1. The simpletons on the Dev team deem it "tooo haaaaard" and don't want to do it.  Same as with NPC's shooting through walls, the existing broken content, the busted UI, and content that is more imaginative than scavenger hunts and million HP mobs.

2. Server merges=admission of defeat.

3.  Why waste the money and time of the Devs, who would probably need 6 months to devise a way to do merges once forced to do it when the game isn't likely to last that long?

4. They still think they can repopulate them.  Somehow.  Usually after imbibing illegal substances and Red Bull.

5.  Denser server populations expose the fundamental flaws in the NGE.  To fix this would require a serious rework of systems (tooo haaaaard)  and an investment in servers (too expensive for a game near it's end).

I encourage everyone who doubts the word of those who reject the NGE to try it for themselves. http://tryswg.com

Experience for yourself a combat system that doesn't work, a broken UI...

server merges have little if anything too with gaining subs, if you have 20+ servers and all are always light cut to 5-10 so the remaining fan base you have can actually interact with ppl instead of seeing nothing but broke ass city's. but anyway this game is long past due for server merge needed one over a year ago

Yeah, server merges aren't about gaining subs, they usually result in loss of subs, but they increase population density among those left.  If you have 500 people spread among 10 servers, close 5 servers and 100 people quit, you then have 5 servers with 400 people spread across them.  You have gone from an average of 50 people per server to an average of 80 people per server.

SWG has unique problems that will make server merges a bigger mess than most other games (housing, cities, etc.), which will result in more players quitting than a game like EQ2.  For the folks who don't quit, they will be able to much more easily find others to play the game with.

Another problem with merging SWG's servers is that the expected loss of subs might be large enough to shut the game down.  If enough people leave to drop the sub numbers below the game over line, merging servers would do more harm than good (if you consider the game closing 'harm', which I don't).  The thing is, I doubt that many people would unsubscribe to the game.  If they have put up with everything that has happened since launch, the CU, or the NGE, they aren't going anywhere until the servers are unplugged.

Yeah I saw that too. There were several posts from players that actually preferred no players around. One guy stated that his city had 2 remaining players left (him and one other) and he liked it that way.

Many of the posters obviously arent MMO gamers. They dont want players around. Clearly they arent contributing much to the MMO community.  And I cant imagine they craft at all considering low pop = low sales.

Theyre definitely some of the most selfish players Ive ever seen. They would rather sit on an empty server and let the game go down the tubes than merge.

Theyre all gonna be in for a surprise when SOE announces server mergers. Make no mistake, there will be mergers. SOE is all about the money and they arent going to pay to run empty servers. I guarantee some SOE bean counter crunched the numbers and they determined that it will be cheaper to lose more players than to keep empty servers up and running.

Im glad to see input on this thread about what ur feelings and stances are on this.... the thing here is that a good portion of the posters are for mergers to have people to interact with which is great since I left the game due to low server population last december of 07 many other reasons to but mainly no people to do content with. Then there are the posters that are worried about cities they built and resources not being about to transfer and threaten to leave if a merger took place/ It seems if they did a free toon transfer instead to let the people wanting to leave to go to new upgraded servers (wishful thinking...) and let the ones that want to be in their ghosttowns behind eventually Soe would close down the ghost servers and force those players to more populated servers anyway to cut back  maintainence costs which in turn those players would quit anyway. but that is my thoughts on the issue for now..maybe more later :)

I know you're scared SWG might gain a bit more popularity buts its ok, you can always hold the fact that Pre-NGE had higher subs, stick to that and you wont risk being wrong.
