He does a crap job and should be fired, he may make money but tbh i'd take pride over money and produce quality games and not complete shite. Not one of their current titles are known for their quality or high reviews....... EQ back in the day but not anymore and the rest of their mmorpgs and games are just a joke. Blizzard came in and showed them how to do it on their first ever mmorpg and SOE can't seem to get it right after all these years....

May 13th, 2008: John Smedly gives poorly designed speech, filled with typos and grammatical errors, at ION convention.
May 14th, 2008: Word of the poor speech spreads through the mmo community.
May 16th, 2008: The ION conventions attendence numbers plummet, and fans of "proper english" boycott all future versions of the convention.
May 20th, 2008: With dwindling resources, the ION convention reports it is being bought out by Podium Publishing, a division of SOE. Podium Publishing is dedicated to bringing the best in computer design expos to the consumer, without the hassle of competition or ingenuity. ION will be the first member of the "convention pass", a system that allows customers to attend multiple (and often boring) conventions for one, low ticket price.
And so it continues.........

You know what it just proves that Evil prevails over good in this world, nice people ( especially SWG Vets) get shafted and screwed over..... and people like John Smedley are laughing all the way to bank with the nice peoples hard earned ,and honestly earned money... all I can say and I'm sure alot of people will agree with me, is that I hope the what go's round comes round proverb eventually smacks John Smedley right in the kisser.
Might I just add that I do not have a problem with SOE in general but this guy is the equivalent of the Anti Christ for the Gaming and Mmo industry. |

If Smed's speech is done to the same quality as his management of SOE, the population in the room will halve about every 12 seconds. The only reason why it will take THAT long is because the exit doors will keep crashing, working as intended Why John Smedley is considered anything but a miserable failure is beyond me. He and Brad (and it was mainly Brad) had their ONE hit, Everquest. The only other middling successes that SOE has had was a game that was the sequel to EQ, and SWG, before Smed and his miserable staff started screwing with it. All that aside, I hope SOE never fires him. Smed is doing a better job of bringing that company to it's end than someone who deliberately set out to end it could. To that, he does the bidding of us burned SWG players more than he knows... I actually am glad that Smed is going to be the first to bring microtransaction, or what I call "macrotranscam" based games out. With him running the show, it's certain to be a spectacular (and public) failure, which should (I hope) invalidate the concept. Non flat rate games are NOT GOOD for the MMO player, they ultimately will exploit the hardcore player.

on top of his many grrrrreaaat accomplishments lets not foget lieing, not listening to the sub base and doing one of the most underhanded things by authorizing a stealth nerf that was known as the NGE.

He's an unethical person. His presence at some convention validates nothing really. He's the past. The question now is, who is going to fill the leadership vacuum in the mmo development world and lead us forward into actual next gen mmo's. |

I'd say the posts in this thread so far demonstrate how the mmo community feels Smedly's lies and thievery. He is a unending vortex sucking the very life and substance out of this genre. |

Back when playing EQ I met Smed and Brad in game several times. I'm glad to say that one of them is no longer in the gaming industry in a meaningful role. I'm sad that the other one still is...

Wow, everyone is in agreement here. Think SOE even cares? probably not...
I try to stay positive - but .... there are times when mismanagement is so irritating and destructive that one just has to say screw-em and avoid their products/services voting with ones mind/mouth is great - but voting with the pocketbook resonates more loudly ... << won't go back to EQII unless they drop the monthly price considerably to the point where I feel it is fair for the product i'm receiving x xkey was here |

Must be that everyone who anyone would have wanted to listen to were either busy or completely disinterested. WTF is this ION thing anyway? I bet SOE created it so that Smedley could go spread more lies about the amazing quality of SOE's products.

Maybe it's some sort of scared straight program for developers.. where they try to learn from Smed's mistakes. I cant think of any other reasonable explanation for making the most hated guy in game development your keynote speaker. |

It was OGDC. renamed this year. Taken from one of the news bits on http://www.ionconference.com/ : "ION has several advantages over the old name OGDC. It is easy to pronounce and even easier to remember. It stands out from the alphabet soup of acronyms. It has energy, like our attendees. And it is about making bonds and connections, whether that means new business relationships, or connecting ideas together to create the Next Big Thing." It made me lol anyways. |

I met Smedley and he's a nice guy in real life and i'd wish him well but i just don't think the SOE guys do their job correctly, it's sooo obvious to me atleast what needs sorting out. A ex dev told me that their teams get cannibalised and moved over to other projects all the time and it's like thats no way to run a mmorpg. |
