Is it possible to play POTBS for purely the PVE content and avoid being caught up in PVP battles?

Yes...but you won't want to, IMO.

I ask because my wife isn't a huge fan of PVP, though this game seems to take PVP in a different sense then a cloaked rogue player jumping you in the darkness.

Yeah, the thing is though...without the PVP, there's just not that much to do that isn't really repetitive and not too much fun after a while...even the fans are saying as much.  The PVE could be fun for 20-30 hours of play probably, but for me would be far too boring to continue after that.

p.s. Before anyone says I'm slamming the game, go read the 92 posts from it's biggest supporters telling everyone it's a PvP/RvR game first...

if your wife can lay back and enjoys storylines

and atmosphere she can totaly pve to max lvl.

i would suggest a free trader Char,

crafting is no grind and vs npcs the trader boats are strong ennough.

If you pay together with her you may want a

NO(naval officer) to guard her on her *profit runs* or group for big  missions

let her run solo missions/crafting while you go out and hunt for PVP or do Portbattles

Correct, PvP in this title is handled either by you intentionaly flagging yourself as available or by automaticaly flagging yourself as available by taking command of class specific ships.  Being flagged as PvP means that anyone, at anytime in the open sea can engage you irregardless of relative strengths.

You can, however simply not flag yourself and be immune from PvP for the most part.  I say for the most part because the true purpose of this game is to capture enemy ports (Ports currently owned by Nations other than you own).  The process of capturing those ports involves creating an open PvP zone (a large red ring in the Open sea) around the port.  Anyone, flagged or not, who sails into that zone can be attacked as if they were flagged.

Now, knowing all that you *can* avoid PvP completely.  Just don't flag, don't sail the wrong ship, and avoid Ports that are under attack or which have high "unrest" totals (meaning that they could become contended soon).

That leaves you free to participate in the economy and to play the PvE missions to your heart's content.  The problem with that, is that the AI on PvE ships is woefully lacking and the missions do become quite repetitive very quickly (although the "storyline" missions were fun for me).  And the economy, although you can make a lot of money, really doesn't accomplish anything in a PvE sense.  You can make loads of money, but there's nothing non-PvP related to really spend it on unfortunately.

Hope that helps.
