The interface does not size with higher resolutions, and does not adapt well to modding (you cannot change a lot of the fonts for example...and makes my old eyes hurt with the squinting on my 24" monitor and 56" HD-ILA HDTV)

The quests are inundated with the kill 10x variety...as most MMO's are, but they prove to be more boring to me.

And overall the world felt lackluster, with NPC's spouting "Woe is me..." when you talk to them...Less than adequate animations, forced grouping to complete full questlines (I mean the end of a major story quest...for those nitpicking words) unless the quest turns grey...

But, this is all opinion, so, yes, there are those of us who hate it, and those that like it...just trial it...and make sure to play to at least level 30...as the first levels are actually not too bad...then it just turns into Lord of the Bore!

That sums up it pretty much! For me the combat is way too slow.. you have to whack the same damn piggy for 50 times before it drops, combat is the same old target and bash 1-5 keys and wait cooldowns, the system is not that bad but when killing something small like badger, boar or moles takes long it gets boring.

Specials skills/moves/spells are also mostly weak and make combat long (+2 damage to hit and enemy will bleed for 1% health every 1 minute and target has 1000 hp. )

I would still play LotRO if it weren't for poor customer support I had.  I canceled my account after an exchange with one off their "reps" and refuse to pay for their paycheck.

Other than that, I enjoyed it  :)

But it was WoW that put a simple face on it with simple death penalties, quick levelling and mediocre quests...a.k.a - LOTRO

What makes you actually believe that all gamers hate a game like this?  Where are you forming your opinion here?  You must take into consideration that any forum such as this is only a minute and I really mean extremely small sampling of  all gamers out there.  I would wager a guess that it's not even a thousandths of a percent.

This observation can be made for any of the games listed on this forum.  Please take into consideration that no forum gets enough people on a daily basis to make an overall assesment of whether a game is loved or hated.

How do yo tell if a game is popular or not?  Well, take a look at quarterly earnings and subscription numbers of said game.  That's when you can make comparisons and possible assumptions about popularity.

Actually the game is fairly popular.  At last based on number of subs it seems to be the second most popular sub based MMO in North America and Europe currently.  It's not a super smash hit, it's closer in number of subs to EQ II and EVE than to WoW.  But it is doing well and growing steadily to all appearances, hater propoganda to the contrary.

For whatever reason the vocal minority that can't stand the game seems trully passionate about attacking it.  Since they can't get to the offiicial LoTRO boards, some of them end up on boards like this one posting "LoTRO sucks" endlessly.   Maybe it's a "fight the man" sort of thing, who knows.  In any case, those of us that play know the games doing well, and so (for the most part) aren't worried enough about it to bother responding to the same 4 points ad infinitum on one random message board.

I would say ignore what you've read and try the game for yourself.   If you think every MMO since pre-trammel UO sucked, well don't bother with it.  If your think grinding at camps endlessly to level is "the best thing eva!"  again, don't bother.  However, if you enjoy quest based PvE MMOs with deep lore, odds are you'll think it's pretty fun.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

"This is the Master-Ring, the One Ring to rule them all."

Good posts all.  Glad to see some real discussion going on and not just simple game bashing... well mostly.

That's the great thing about MMO gaming in the days of free trials and open betas, you get a lot of leeway to decide if a particular MMO is to your liking or not.

I don't think I will ever understand the distraught attitude that some gamers seem to express over their gaming experiences though.  If I play a game I don't like or am no longer having fun with... big deal... there are plenty of other MMOs out there.  The faster you move on... the faster you can start having fun playing again.

Too many times some gamers seem to forget that it's first and foremost a GAME... something that we do to have FUN.  If we aren't having fun... then it's not the right game... it really is that simple.

For a lot of people it goes beyond just having fun, though.  A lot of the resentment or even hate people show is tied to people's expectation
