While i do understand the problem of racism in sport.
I really do not understand how this could be taken as a racist comment.

Similar to the problem going on in the Cricket at the moment. Andrew Symonds (black) was called a monkey by a Indian player. Yet i am still trying to figure out how that was racist in any way.

What are your opinions, how can we better rid sport of racism. Because while i do support the change from the old days when racist sledges where commonplace. I think a line has to be drawn somewhere. Perhaps when the person is actually offended. As with the golf case, Tiger Woods considered it a 'non-issue'.

do you not know the cultural beginnings of lynching??

... its the same as seeing a jewish guy playing a sport.. and saying that they should be gassed... even in a funny way.. you just wouldn't feel right about it right?

Or if you jokingly ask an arabic athlete if they have a bomb under their shirt...

Your examples are examples of racism, i agree. But your intention there was to link specific events in history to races to make a joke.
Ive heard numerous people use the word 'lynch' though, without any references or intentions to any racism.
Sure, this guy made a mistake, but we are talking about two good friends. Do you really think Tiger Woods wants this guy sacked over a comment made to him that even he didnt find offensive?

To use a cricket example again. One of the newspapers has suggested to call Andrew Symonds "Heston", after Charlton Heston, who is the actor who played George Taylor in the movie "Planet of the Apes"

Dont you think the connection is being dragged out a bit far?

The dictionary definition of lynch is "to put to death, esp. by hanging, by mob action and without legal authority."  Mob justice existed a long time before that term was even coined, much less associated with racism in America.

And gassing existed before the holocaust and bombings existed before 9-11... But all those things now how racial connotations when put in certain contexts.

Which if i'm not mistaken was the intent of the golf commentator? to make a joke right? To say that your buddy who is black should be taken into a dark alley and lynched is the racial equivalent of telling your jewish buddy that he should be put in a small cell and gassed..

I dont know what kind of friends you have.. but i would definitely not tell my good friend of 12 years.. that I want to take them to a dark alley... Cut off your fingers and toes... burn you.. shoot you... hang you up...  then cut off your arms... castrate you.. so that I can scare your family into obeying me.. and if I DID want to tell my friend that.. I definitely wouldn't tell him in public... MUCH less on TV/ on the air...

its a woman who made the comments.. I would hope you read your own link/story

The connection isn't being dragged out at all.. the repercussions are.

Calling a black person a monkey is racist because of the origin of the insult...it's the same as saying that the black person is primitive.

Oh and about the comment for which he was fired, if he had chosen ANY word other than lynch, I think he would have been fine...it's just one of those things...I don't think he really meant it to have a racial connotation, especilly if the guy has no prior history of being a bigot.

by the way...what the hell were you doing watching golf?

There's something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be, desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?

Not debating that at all, just pointing out that the "cultural beginnings" of lynching had nothing to do with racism.
