preCU = pre Combat Upgrade SOE removed skillbased for levels and removed the dabbling in a third profession among other things, and introduced several rather annoying bugs in its place.

An 8 month period of time at the beggining of SWG that a lot of people like to piss and moan about it not existing anymore.

8 months? Not quite. Was a little bit longer than that.

And you may call it pissing and moaning, but that completely changed the game for a lot of people. And then the NGE really changed the game. It's not like changing a class or nerfing a skill....the entire game completely changed.

That's kind of a big deal.

CU is a time in the game, pre being before it.

NGE = New Game Enhancements.

The original game, as launched, is what's known as pre-CU. Between the CU and launch of the NGE is generally referred to as pre-NGE (alhough this term can mean pre-CU as well).

The CU revamped all sorts of areas of the game, notable the combat system, changing the way many things were done and how the game played. The NGE went even further. Essentially it changed the whole game, with the exception of (most) locations.

Some of the most controversial changes were reducing the number of professions available to nine, making Jedi available as a profession from the get-go, removing Creature Handlers, changing combat from a turn-based system to a more FPS style, and simplifying crafting.

The NGE is probably the most controversial move ever undertaken by a games company. It pissed off a lot of players who had invested time and money into the old system and felt ripped off. Questions like the OP tend to generate a lot of posts about indivuals gripes with the system. Generally the two most popular complaints are that its too easy to be a Jedi now and that combat is too simple.

Pre Combat Upgrade (Pre CU) is the original version, in the time period from release some time in 2003 to spring 2005 (may or april i think it was).

Combat upgrade (CU) the first big revamp. Replaced the promised CURB (combat upgrade and rebalance). The CU last for about 6 months, and was replaced be the...

New Game Enhancement (NGE) in november 2005, and is swg´s current version.

CUNGE means the period from the CU up till today. Also known as "Post CU".

PreNge means the period before the NGE, usualy used be those who liked both Pre CU and CU, but not the NGE-version.

So:

SWG--------CU (combat upgrade)------------NGE (new game enhancement)

SWG was a class and level less system, you had skills. The CU introduces levels to all combat profgessions, and some other changes to the whole game. This would had been a good time for the SWG community to react........but we would never had gues SOE would pul of a NGE later : (

The simple answer is pre-CU was the original philosophy behind the development of SWG where 2 things were central - community/interdependance, and choices.

With respect to community and interdepedence, it is pretty much self explanatory. But with respect to the choices we had to make it was in virtually every aspect of SWG. From character creation we had to choice a race that had inherant stats that worked well for the profession you intended to play (although it wasn't absolutely necessary). We had to choose our stat migration (HAM bar) to best suit what we thougt would work best. We chose a prof that suited our playstyle, and only took some of those skills from that profession if that's all we wanted. We chose weapons that either had a low encumberance or higher damage. We chose armor in the same way if we chose it at all. We chose our starting planet. We chose what foods to eat and when.

In making all these choices we had to know that no matter how good you chose your options there were still certain vulnerabilities that left you susceptable to others, and that grouping with a variety of profs helped to protect you. Essentially, combat created another level of interdependency that formed a very stronge community.

It was all intertwined, and quite remarkable.

But sadly, very bugged and imbalanced.

It was supposed to be unbalanced. That was the whole point ot grouping. We were supposed to be vulnerable to certain profs.

And as for bugs, well, very few actually affected me. I was able to look past the minor issues I had because of the fun I was having.

Amen to that. Its brave to hear people say that word today....unbalanced...unbalanced.  Most people just cant stand that.

I think its a fundamental feature in all MMOs. Everything cant be the "same". There should be differences.

Well, balance simply means boring IMO.

All you end up with are duels.

I want to know that I can be in danger at any time. It keeps you on your toes, and keeps things quite exciting.

Hi all, ok first of all, thank you all for your informative answers to my questions, I've just bought a mmo six pack , which included  SWG starter kit and a 30day play card for each game, so I'm very much looking forward to having a go at SWG, so I started reading up on the game and the community and was just wondering what those terms ment, thanks to your answers I'm still going to look forward to playing, just that now I'm going to be hoping that it's not to simple a game to play.

Again thanks' everyone
